All things Shopify and commerce
All of a sudden recently my store has VENMO as an option on express checkout.
Used to only be paypal.
any help to remove? Confusing my people! Lol
To remove Venmo as an option for express checkout on your Shopify store, you can follow these steps:
Go to the "Payments" section of your Shopify admin and click on the "Express checkout" tab.
Scroll down to the "Accepted payment methods" section and click on the "Edit" button.
Uncheck the box next to "Venmo" to remove it as an accepted payment method.
Click on the "Save" button to save your changes.
After you have removed Venmo as an accepted payment method, it will no longer be shown as an option for express checkout on your store.
It is important to note that removing Venmo as an accepted payment method will not affect your ability to accept payments through PayPal, which is the default express checkout option on Shopify. Customers will still be able to use PayPal to complete their purchases on your store.
I actually have the same question, but looked at our "Accepted Payment Methods" and we only have PayPal shown (no Venmo). My concern for removing it is that we have a customer that says he never received his Venmo refund, although the order shows a payment by PayPal in our system, which was refunded. He does have screenshots that appear to show a payment to us from Venmo.
Unfortunately, for us - there is no check box next to VENMO to uncheck.
Any other ideas?
In order to use Venmo on your Shopify store, you will need to have PayPal enabled as a payment gateway. The reason for this is because Venmo is a Supported PayPal provider and is only available US merchants during this time. If you are a merchant in the United States, and have PayPal Express Checkout enabled in your checkout, then Venmo will appear as an accelerated payment option on your store.
If you want to disable it you should look for Paypal and disable Venmo
Nbody wants to use venmo, the issue is we want to remove it. There is no "Express Checkout" section under Payments for me. Shopify randomly added venmo for me as an option for customers to pay, there is currently no way to remove this inside of the payments section in shopify
I agree. No one in our customer demographic is interested in Venmo as a payment option, and it is just a distraction in the shopping cart. It stops more popular payment options like Apple Pay and Amazon Pay from being displayed prominently and lowers our conversions.
We also do not have Express Checkout settings or PayPal settings. I have gone into our PayPal merchant account to try and remove it, and there is no option to do so. I suspect Niclas may be more used to working with Shopify Plus Stores, where there are more customization options.
I shouldn't have to pay a developer to remove something that I never opted for in the first place. I contacted Shopify, and they told me to contact PayPal as they could not remove it. I contacted PayPal, and they directed me back to Shopify. That runaround is rubbish. Shopify added it, unbeknownst to me, so they should give me the option to remove it.
Can one of you more tech-savvy folks please chime in here and give us some workarounds?
Thanks in advance.
We asked a developer friend to try and remove the button for us, and he could not do so. It is embedded in style sheets within the cart, and though he could see the code, there is additional code in the cart that overrides any attempt to remove it. That is Shopify code, not PayPal code, so this is a Shopify issue. If Shopify cannot fix this, we may be forced to use a different Shopping Cart. Can someone from Shopify please weigh in on this and tell us how to remove this code?
I had this same problem trying to remove it. There may be a CSS solution but it doesn't seem to work through normal methods. Any advice or solutions would be greatly appreciated!
The only workaround that is somewhat satisfying for me was to add additional express checkout options. Before, I had only PayPal and AmazonPay (I prefer less options to reduce useless clutter), but by also adding ShopPay and GooglePay, it ends up bumping Venmo last (will not display unless customer chooses to "show more options"). As far as I can tell, it remains the same on both mobile and desktop. Could be a useful temporary fix until a better solution comes up.
That doesn't work. There is no option to remove. I need this gone too. I contacted paypal and they said that it's a shopify thing and they cannot do anything. No more runarounds please. Any other ideas??
I also want this removed. I have been talking with customer service and they have no clue. I ended up removing paypal completely and that took it away. For now. But I am assuming if I reconnect paypal it will add it back.
Shopify can't do anything to remove the Venmo option. It comes with it if you have PayPal activated in your payment setting. I confirmed with Shopify support that if customers use Venmo to checkout, the funds get paid into your PayPal account that you had already set it up.
Following as I would like to remove it as well.
Have you or anyone else inquiring received a solution to this? I also am seeing Venmo and don’t want it in my express checkout. I also do not want to remove PayPal in order to make this happen.
I haven't seen a solution yet.
I have a feeling shopify is rolling out this "feature" slowly and why some checkouts still don't have venmo. I've also noticed my checkout formatting has changed just a bit. The express payment buttons are not longer encased in a box like before, and I can no longer edit the font/positioning of certain things as this new "whatever they are doing" is overriding it. Things that I can affect without Plus (center or left justify the titles, etc) are not taking my edits anymore as this new checkout is overriding it. So they are doing something, and whatever this change is, is forcing venmo in there too. They must have gotten an agreement with paypal/venmo that is beneficial for shopify even if it sucks for us.
I am searching for this solution as well. Venmo suddenly appeared in my store and it connects to my personal Venmo account. I need this Venmo off my store but I want to keep PayPal.
I'm also looking for a fix to this. Disappointed Shopify would add a "feature" to the checkout page that could definitely hurt conversion rates for some stores without a fix. They need to fix this ASAP.

Has this question still not received a correct answer?
Nope. Shopify won't come on here to explain and what I got from them is it's part of the paypal connection and can't be removed, unless you also remove paypal express. Of course they won't say if they went into an agreement with paypal to force this on us and therefore we cannot remove it. It seems it will only be visible IF the customer has a venmo account they use.
Unfortunately, the Venmo button is not just available if a customer has Venmo; it is always available. I do not have a Venmo account, and it shows up on mobile, tablet, and desktop. It is not like the Apple Pay button which only shows up if you have Apple Pay.
It is part of Shopify's new deal with PayPal last year, and they just foisted it on all of their customers.
We have discovered it is easily removed if you have Shopify Plus, so this is another example of Shopify sticking it to their small business customers.
We have been speaking with PayPal, Venmo, and Shopify. After everyone gave us the runaround and passed us back and forth, we finally got PayPal to admit there is a workaround to hide it, but so far, we have been unable to get it to work. Everyone says it cannot be removed, but apparently, it can be if you use Shopify Plus, so that is just rubbish.
We are working with a new developer now, so if he can get a workaround to work, I will let you all know.
Thank you for this response! I will stay tuned. I've been trying workarounds with no luck. It's a frustrating situation and I am not sure what to tell my client who explicitly does not want Venmo as a pay option.
So after months of back and forth between PayPal, Venmo, Shopify, and four different developers (all of whom we had to pay), the consensus is that there is no way to remove Venmo unless you have a Shopify Plus account. With a Shopify Plus account, it is literally one line of .liquid code that can be removed.
Shopify claims that they cannot make this change to the shopping cart for regular (non-Shopify Plus) accounts for "Security Reasons."
We also got their standard "Well, we will review this with the developers, and if lots of people ask for it to be changed, we will add it to the development queue," which means that it will go nowhere, as in five years as a Shopify store, they have never fixed/implemented anything we have asked for.
I can only see two motivations for Shopify to have done this -
1) They are trying to force a lot of their customers to become Shopify Plus clients, or
2) They are trying to get clients to remove PayPal completely so that Shop Pay becomes a preferred payment provider.
We find conversions lower with Shop Pay as older customers don't want to deal with codes on their phones in order to use it.
Shopify Plus is also not an option for us due to its inflated price. We get better shipping rates from ShipStaion, and the only other benefit is a slightly decreased credit card processing fee. We cant justify $2000.00 a month just for that.
We also don't want to use the solution proposed earlier to add every express checkout solution (Apple, Google ShopPay, Amazon, PayPal, Venmo, etc.), as we find this confuses customers and lowers conversions. If you give customers too many options at checkout, they simply abandon the cart.
I am beyond fed up with this, to the point that we are now starting to look seriously at other e-commerce providers. If you have had good experiences with other companies and think they are better than Shopify, we would love to hear about them.
Thanks in advance.
WooCommerce worked well for me in the past. I can’t explain it but since I moved my store to Shopify in 2017, my sales have gone down annually, significantly. Used to go up every year prior. Might need to jump back to WooCommerce/Wordpress to see if it helps me in a year or so when I have the time. My best friend is on WooCommerce and pulls in millions. Maybe something to this. Shopify has always felt clunky and I’ve wasted so much time trying to fix bugs in various templates I’ve purchased over the years; also get complaints from customers about having trouble placing orders. It has its pros but maybe isn’t for everyone.
Thanks for the suggestion, John. I will check it out.
****UPDATE****
I contacted the help desk and THEY FIXED IT!
"Just as I promised, I am happy to update you that we have successfully disabled the Venmo from your Paypal Express Checkout.
We actually added a Beta Flag to your internal Back-end to apply the changes we wanted and from here, you are all set 🙂 Thank you for the trust and time on this matter" Huge thank you to Christopher M who followed up and made my day!
Shopify added this Venmo express check-out on my website and it's cuasing check-out problems with customers whom just want to use a credit card.. Has Shopify really not fixed such a simple issue yet? I'm also thinking about leaving Shopify over this annoyance and loss of sales.
Hey folks! Venmo is included with your PayPal express checkout and is fully powered by them. You may be able to disable this checkout option in your PayPal seller account, but I don't know for sure. I recommend connecting with PayPal directly for further help with that.

Hi Shay,
No, it is not possible to disable Venmo as an option in your PayPal seller account. We have contacted PayPal multiple times about this issue, and every time they direct us back to Shopify, so suggesting that is a complete waste of time. We keep hearing from Shopify that this action is controlled by PayPal, but Shopify controls the liquid code in the cart, so there is no way PayPal could have added a Venmo button without Shopify approval and enabling. Therefore, it is a Shopify issue, but Shopify does not seem prepared to solve it no matter how many merchants ask for it. As we are able to manage the addition/removal or Apple Pay, Amazon Pay and Google Pay why not Venmo?
Thanks for letting me know that PayPal is directing you back to Shopify for help with this.
Venmo is included directly with the PayPal express checkout, each third party payment gateway is powered by the company that develops it. While Shopify definitely has a part in this as we review changes and approve them before they are available to merchants, we have no control over the offerings included in gateways. The decision to include Venmo as an option is solely up to PayPal. If they have not provided the option to disable it in your merchant account with them, that isn't something we can assist with.
I can say that customers will only see Venmo as an express payment option on the dynamic checkout button if they meet these requirements:
If a customer does not use Venmo then they won't see it as an option for checkout.

Hi Shay,
Thanks for the response.
Unfortunately, it isn't the case that shoppers only see Venmo if they have the Venmo app installed. I am located in the US, I do not have a Venmo account, or use the Venmo app, and yet I still see the Venmo button as an option. A couple of our team members have tested it also, and they still see it.
If it was just customers that used Venmo, it wouldn't be an issue, but as very few of our customers use Venmo that creates the problem.
it is also showing on desktop, not just mobile
My client very much does not want to offer Venmo. There is no way to turn off. It is knocking Apple Pay off the screen as an option, which they do want. After reading all of this they may have to turn off paypal, which they would rather not do. They specifically do not want to offer ShopPay. And after doing the calculations, it is not cost effective to use Shopify Plus. There has to be a solution, it seems like everyone is pointing to someone else for the fix - but if it's available for plus, than it should be available to all - this is a customer payment solution and should not be exclusive to larger stores.
Hi Jessica,
I totally agree that if it is available for Plus then it should be available to all stores, but Shopify does not.
They refuse to remove it or hide it, and there is no way to customize it in the cart without Plus. I am disgusted with Shopify for not paying attention to the needs of their small business customers, and for implementing things that are detrimental to our business. When you call them they try to pass the blame back to PayPal, but it is all in Shopify as they own the shopping cart, and are the only ones that can make changes to it.
It seems a lot of small businesses are not paying attention to conversion rates on their carts, otherwise they would realize that giving customers too many options is as detrimental as giving them too few. Shopify would just like everyone to only use ShopPay as that is where they make their money.
Hello, I just want to make sure I'm understanding this. I couldn't find a response that answered it in this way directly. So if we don't have Venmo but someone pays through Venmo via Paypal express checkout, the Venmo payment will still be handled by Paypal, correct? Or does it mean we have to set up a Venmo account?
Got it, and to confirm is this on the "Buy Now" button that you are seeing this? You will see all available payment options on the checkout itself, so that is expected behavior. The limitations I noted are for the buy now button on the product pages.
If you are able to grab some screen recordings of this option showing up even without having the venmo app installed, etc, you can provide that to our support team for further investigation.

Congratulations! You managed to get something accomplished that has been an issue for over two years. I applaud your efforts on behalf of other small businesses. We are heading over to Shopify support now, to see if we can get it removed also.
I got it through shopify support. If they need to find the beta flag, the store is jaopa.myshopify.com. I did have to wait overnight for him to get back to me.
