Hi Community,

I've been seriously unwell and have disconnected my 3PL for sales of my only product(s). I don't know when I'll be back on my feet.

1. Is there a risk to simply leaving the store inactive? How long can I leave it?

2. (Speaking as a tech noob) Is my website code held on Shopify or with my hosting provider?

1.  Is there a risk to simply leaving the store inactive? How long can I leave it? 

  • If you're referring to deactivating your store or allowing it to become a frozen store, evidently, your admin and website will be inaccessible. While this may be the most sensible option, given you're stopping your operations for an indefinite amount of time, your information can only be guaranteed for a fixed period of time and that is 2 years. As long as you reactivate your store within that time frame, you can continue where you left off. The risk you potentially face with this option is customers and visitors getting the impression that your store is permanently closed. Since your store will be inaccessible, they will not see your website or any messaging about it. There's also a risk of losing your data if you reactivate more than 2 years later. 
  • If you plan to come back to selling sooner than later, you may want to consider putting your store on the $9 USD/month Pause and Build plan. This plan allows you to access your admin and still work on your store, and it will also let visitors visit your website. With this option, you can still showcase your products, if you wish to do so, while letting customers know your store is temporarily closed. Alternatively, you can put up the password-protected page and inform your customers about the temporary closure there.

2. Is my website code held on Shopify or with my hosting provider? 

  • Since Shopify is your web hosting service, your website code is hosted on our servers. Is there any particular reason why you're asking? I'll be happy to further clarify any concerns about this.
