how to add a note field for customers

i would like to add a note field to give customers the opportunity to write information about the order.

i'm using the dawn theme.

Are you wanting to add a note field to the product page for unique products, or to the cart page before your customers checkout? 

If you wish to enable it for the cart field, then that should be available to you within the theme settings. If you go to your theme, edit theme, then click the paintbrush icon on the left hand side, scroll down to cart, and you will see the option to enable cart notes. 

Cart notes should be a standard option available across all themes that can be enabled or disabled!

You can try using this method to locate the cart notes option:

1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
2. Find the Dawn theme, and then click Customize.
3. Open the drop-down menu at the top of the page, and select Cart.
4. On the left hand side, click on Subtotal: 

   

5.  Then, look on the right side of your screen and you will see an option to enable cart notes.
6. Click Save.

If you want to collect information at the product pages, you can also check this app out. It allows merchants to create as many fields as possible in different forms such as upload, textbox, dropdown etc.
