All things Shopify and commerce
We are selling original framed one-of-kind works of art. The frame is included with the purchase of the product. We want to offer the customer a choice of either a black or white frame. Where can we do this? If we use variants each frame option becomes a separate product. For example, if someone selects a white frame, then a black frame appears to be still available when it is not because the single product (original piece of art) has already been purchased in a white frame.
Hey, @tipandnub!
Ash here from the Shopify team. Welcome to the Shopify Community, and thank you for posting your question!
In your specific situation, I can absolutely see how the variant set up built into Shopify may not be ideal. I have an idea for a solution that should help solve this for you! Currently when you add a variant for a frame option, you're correct that it's essentially a separate product. What you could do instead is remove the variants from your product(s) in the products section of the Shopify admin, and use a product options application. Product options applications allow you to add in selectable options, such as a frame colour, without having those counted as product variants.
Here's a link to our App Store with a number of product option applications for you to consider. Additionally, here's a list of some that I think would do the job you're looking for:
I hope this helps, and let me know what you think of this solution by replying back here. I'm also curious to hear which app you end up using if you decide to try one out.

Hi @tipandnub,
It's been a while since you raised your topic, and I see that you received suggestions for some third-party apps to assist with your setup. However, I'd like to recommend another app that could be useful and free to use 🤗. If you are currently using a paid app, switching to this app could save you a significant amount.
The app I'd like to suggest is the Easify Product Options app. It offers both Free and Pro plans, but the Free plan is sufficient for setting up your custom options 🙌.
Here's a quick demonstration of how you can set them up:
Create a new option set:
Add an option for customers to select either a Black or White frame. You have the freedom to choose from various option types, such as Image Swatches, Color Swatches, Radio Buttons, Buttons, and more. The Easify Product Options app provides a wide range of 25 different option types, surpassing what other available apps can offer 👌.
Once you have created the custom options, simply assign them to the relevant products, and you're good to go.
I encourage you to give the app a try, as there are many more exciting features for you to explore 😊.
Hi
I have created a size option with your app but it doesn't assign anything to my product pages. Any idea why is that?
Thanks
Update: I am using Easify Product Options App on my store and it works perfectly. It has saved a lot of work for me as I would have needed to add many variants to my store.
Their support is amazing I am glad that I have found them!
Hi is their a way in Easify when creating options without creating a new variation product to have the total price show up?
From what I see now, if the option costs more it will show up as +$10 but it will not display the total amount until checkout. I will like the total amount (product + option) to show up on the product page also.
