How to make custom flat rate shipping based on weight or multiples?

I would like my shipping to start at $15 flat rate no matter what, but i would like it to increase by $1 per 3LB.

And yes I do have my products set up properly with weights to do this.

So for example, if a person adds 2 items that weigh 3lbs each then the final shipping would be $17.

If someone added one product that weighs 1lb then the final shipping will stay at $15, but if they were to add three of those 1lb items then the final shipping would be $16.

***I am also open to custom rate add broken down per product and disregard a weight based system. For instance shipping will start @ $15 flat rate but each product has a custom defined money add to the shipping total.

Either way would be fine, whatever works easiest in Shopify.

Thanks!

Hi, @Droy47.

Thank you for reaching out and providing that information!

To do this, you would just need to create custom flat shipping rates by weight. You will need to do the calculations manually and enter them into the rates. For example, your first rate can be 0-2.9lbs $15, second rate will be 3lbs-5.9lbs $16, third rate will be 6lbs-8.9lbs $17, etc. Let me know if you need me to send a screenshot of what this would look like or if you need more infomation on how to do this.

Please let me know if you have any further questions! I would love to learn more about your business. What type of products do you sell?

Hello @Droy47 ,

Both the types of shipping rates that you described (weight based and per product based) are unfortunately not possible in Shopify. Shopify only provides simple flat rate shipping prices or range bound (by cart weight or cart total price) shipping prices.

You would have to use a third party application like ShipMagic to setup such types of rates.

Automate & bulk assign products to shipping profile: Auto Shipping Profiles: Shipr
Calculate accurate shipping rates: Shipping Calculator: ShipMagic
Hide, rename, reorder payment methods at checkout: Payment Customization: PayMix

Hi Shopify team,  I am raising this with the hope that you can raise this at the appropriate forum at Shopify.

It is just incredibly convoluted to add shipping rates in Shopify. Shipping rates are not difficult, there are generally two variables, how much do you want to charge for the first item and then for every additional item.I am building a POD products website and want to charge my customer $10 for the first item and then $5 for subsequent items.  Etsy has a simple shipping profile that does this well. Why can't shopify have something as basic as that? Why are we supposed to pay more money and buy apps to capture this simple detail? You can easily solve this problem with a simple code fix, but seems like shopify likes inconveniencing the paying user so that they pay more money for an app, for something as basic as this. The Q really then becomes, who are Shopify's customers? The users like us who are already paying you a lot of money every month? Or the app developers?

I am hoping this reaches the management team of Shopify and they have a hard look at which side of their platform is more important to them.  And I obviously hope that you can solve this shipping rate problem.

Thank you for your time!

The problem with this seems to be I can't add the same product to multiple profiles, so then what is the point of even having a "by weight" option?? So I'm selling 12 oz coffee bags, and I want to price shipping by weight. Obviously the same products need to be in multiple shipping profiles, because there's a price difference in shipping if they order ONE bag of Sumatra versus if they order FIVE bags of Sumatra. But Shopify doesn't allow for that scenario...?
