How to restrict free shipping discount to continental US?

Hello,

I'm trying to set up a free shipping discount code for orders over a specific $ amount but I want to restrict it to orders shipping within the continental US only. Is there a way to do this?

Hi @mgoose, you would need to get the user's location for that.

So, are you fine if the user is prompted to share their location? Or would you prefer to opt for a less-accurate but automated location capture system?

Hi @mgoose 

You can definitely do this! You will want to set up shipping zones within your shipping profile that you are using for your products. 

Most likely you have all your shipping zones (the places you ship to) grouped together. You will instead want to separate out the USA or the specific states you want the free shipping zone to be available for. Make sure to also include your standard shipping rates in each of the zones as well.

I see that allows me to set up free shipping for a region but is there a way to make a discount code for it? I only want to offer the free shipping deal for a limited time so would I just have to set the free shipping zone up and then set it back to standard shipping prices after the promotion ends?

You could do it as a discount code, but to limit that to a specific group of customers is a bit more difficult as they would need to have existing customer accounts in order to be eligible for the discount code. 

Setting up the shipping zone with free shipping for that period of time will be a lot easier. And you are correct, you enable the free shipping within your shipping settings when you want it to go live and then remove it from the shipping zone once the promotion ends.

Hi,

This workaround is only easier because Shopify's geo feature for shipping discounts doesn't get granular enough. The other workaround being where you can prevent the code from being used if the shipping rate is over $x, but this is a bit clunky as well.

Shipping outside of continental US is very expensive and kills margins, please allow users to pick which states that shipping discounts can apply to. You can do this for shipping zones - can this level of granularity just be applied to the shipping discounts?
