How to revert usage generation for a store

Dear Forum,

Our app helps redirect traffic to Shopify stores, and we charge our merchants on a pay-per-click basis.

A charge is generated based on usage for each store.

In case we need to provide a refund to a merchant, we issue store credits after the charge has been generated.

Is there any way to revert this usage before the charge is generated?

Hi @Stuti17,

If you're using Shopify's Usage Charges for billing, once a charge is recorded, it can't be directly reverted before it's invoiced. However, you have a few options:

  1. Adjust Usage Before Billing Cycle Ends – Instead of waiting for the charge to be finalized, you can track usage manually and adjust it before submitting the final amount.
  2. Issue a Credit Before the Charge Is Processed – If Shopify hasn't invoiced the charge yet, you could issue a negative usage charge (a discount) to offset the refund amount.
  3. Store Credits as a Refund Alternative – Since you’re already offering store credits, you might continue with this approach if Shopify doesn’t allow direct usage charge reversals.

If this is critical, you might want to reach out to Shopify Partner Support to see if they have an internal method for adjusting usage charges before they are invoiced.

You can’t directly revert usage charges before they are generated, but you can try these alternatives:

1. If possible, adjust your app to hold charges for a short period before finalizing, allowing time for adjustments.

2. Since Shopify doesn’t support reversing usage charges, store credits or future discounts are the best workaround.

3. If it’s a recurring issue, Shopify’s billing API team might provide additional guidance.
