How to stop receiving daily marketing spam emails on my online store?

Hi, is there a way to cut off getting emails via my store every day by marketing people? Ever since I opened my store via Shopify platform I get at least 1 or 2 email a day from people all over the world claiming to help me market my store, getting very annoyed of it. I don't want to cut off my actual customers from being able to contact me but I hate the spam. Anyone else had success to stop this?

Hello @Littleblossom,

This is flareAI - Generating Sales from Google Search, on Autopilot. Helping Shopify merchants in generating $5 million in sales from Google Search.

You can try a few different methods to reduce the amount of spam emails you receive:

1. Unsubscribe: Look for the "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of the emails and use it to stop receiving future emails from that sender.

2. Use a spam filter: Most email services have built-in spam filters that can help identify and sort spam messages.

3. Create a separate email address: Use a different email address for your online store and only give it out to trusted sources.

4. Use a contact form: Instead of displaying your email address on your website, use a contact form that customers can use to reach you. This can help reduce the amount of spam you receive.

5. Block email addresses: If you continue to receive spam from a particular sender, you can block the email address in your email client.

6. Use third-party apps: Shopify has apps like the "Email Filter" that can help you to filter the marketing emails.

7. Be cautious with your personal information: Be careful about giving out your email address to anyone, and be wary of clicking on links in emails from unknown senders.

It's honestly out of hand! I literally pay extra for this Outlook email and I can't even use it because of the spam. Part of my business is marketing, so using spam filters could potentially omit emails that are actually welcome!

We've had about 30 today via the store and Instagram.  It's the thing we hate most about Shopify - we have a store on a different platform and no issues with that at all.  If there is a Shopify mod on here, please, sort it out!

This too drives me crazy! I’ve always assumed the contact form email address is on some sort of database that’s accessible to all these marketers. I can never find where or how though and I’m left going down a rabbit hole! Shopify please give us an answer!!

I was rather hoping that someone would indicate where the setting was that detailed how to switch this off. Like many of the people choosing Shopify I'm covered by the EU GDPR rules and they say that Shopify can't send me spam emails without my permission and that I can remove my permission. However Shopify didn't ask for my permission in the first place and are now not giving me the option to unsubscribe so have failed on both accounts.

Maybe someone from Shopify could explain why there isn't an option to unsubscribe and what they are going to do to comply with the regulations?

I have the same thing going on as a new shop owner.  Spammed by fake marketing trying to sell me their service to improve my store.  Any way to filter these out?

After posting this message I updated my email held on Shopify and interestingly for a little while the marketing event emails stopped, but that was just a coincidence. Genuine emails from Shopify now come through using the changed email address and do have options on the bottom to allow for un-subscription. The other marketing event email are using the original email address so don't look to be connected to Shopify, other than the way they are written to make you think they are sent in partnership with Shopify. I guess the only real solution here is to have an email address that isn't made up of the persons name and then the required content to guess the email can't be found on the website.

Hi Geoff,

im confused but interested on how you did this.

did you set up a fake email sort of thing that all of the messages go to?

it’s so annoying I’ve had over 75 Instagram and emails within 24 hours.

im running paid ads on social media and it’s only started since doing that. I’ve excluded all countries bar Australia and still happening.

im only a new shopify store switching from another provider and now I wish I didn’t it’s just that provider didn’t have the functions I needed.

I set up a new email alias that forwarded to my main email, however whilst the official Shopify now use this email the spam still comes through to the original email address. So not really much that can be done about it as it won't be hard for a bot to work out names of people involved in the company and guess their email addresses.

I'm getting 40-45 per day! I wish it was 1-2. It's gotten out of hand @Shopify and we KNOW you're selling our information.

This is what I hate from a Marketer... how we'll make sure it is safe? I'm thinking to shift to another ecommerce site, what you guys recommend? I really feel the system is not safe, how would they know we're using shopify?

You ask "how would they know we're using Shopify?"

Every page on your website is generated from HTML text that tells the
browser how to render the page, within that information is a load of stuff
that the user doesn't see, such as the platform that runs it. Just take a
look at:

https://builtwith.com/

If you are using an email address like sales @ companyname.com
or you are using first.lastname @
companyname.com and people can
identify people with significant control within the business then they can
guess your email. They know which platform you are on and will email you,
this is not going to change if you change platform as the same techniques
work for all platforms.

Some months back I changed the email Shopify contact me on and in my case I
can confirm since the change I have only had official Shopify emails to that
unique email address which in my case indicates it is not Shopify sharing my
contact details.

I tried Wix before but I never receive emails like how I'm receiving now.

I'm fine if they are emailing me for a service, that's normal. But to tell me that hey are shopify expert or asking to speak to shopify expert that's creepy.

Hi everyone,

Have you tried removing the 'powered by shopify' at the bottom of the footer of your page?

In my first Shopify store I removed this before launching the website online and I had no issues with all these marketing emails.

With my second store I forgot to do this before launching and now I'm having the exact same issues as you have (40 a day, it's crazy)

Not sure if this is the answer to the problem but might be worth to try.

My only concern with this is that my 2nd webshop was out of the air for a few days and I still received those emails, however a lot less. Could be that the list was already generated and that would be the reason for it.

Let me know if it works! I'm changing my now and will send you the results.

Cheers

Puk

Afternoon Puk,

How do you remove the "'powered by shopify" on the website and would this help stop getting them spam / scam emails?

Hello there!
I came here to see if anyone else was facing this problem. My store is literally a day old and I am getting dozens of marketing messages. I had to remove my contact from the shop and now they are starting chats too! Which I will be forced to remove from my site if that keeps happening. I cant possibly stay online answering non clients. If i knew Shopify was like that I would probably never open a store. if in 1 day its like that, imagine in a month when I will have started promoting the services I offer? Isnt possible to do anything to block those contacts?

40ish a day. One thing I’m thinking I’m going to do is move away from one of the “plug in” email services and move to G Suite with google. That should alleviate a lot of manual sorting and deleting of it. The spam filter on the “Hosted Email” service through Shopify is crap.
But, that being said, I do know that Shopify makes our store email addresses available to third parties. I have a friend who runs a third party plugin and she told me that it’s offered for marketing of their services. They have to pay for them, so in the end, Shopify is the one selling it. Not that there aren’t bots and crawlers that get it too via the web, but super disappointed to be inundated with the spam too.

Yeah this is absolutely horrible! I signed up by connecting my google account so can't even change my email, but I suspect all of these come from some other service(s) scraping the auto-generated privacy policy that Shopify adds to your site which includes my email address and home address, which was honestly shocking that they would publish that information immediately without warning or my consent. This was my personal email and it is now almost unusable by the volume of spam I receive, even after having removed it from the policy. Gmail doesn't recognise them as spam and they're all from different email addresses.

There should really be a confirmation step and warning before putting anyone's details on the web. Honestly very disappointed, I thought Shopify was supposed to be no-nonsense.

I have this issue too. I don't believe it's Shopify selling information, but from bots crawling our webpages and harvesting info from our storefronts, such as the email addresses. I've changed my listed email address to hello[at]shopname.co.uk, with the [at] included instead of the @ symbol to see if this helps.

That does sound like an good idea, though it would be ideal if we can use a contact form that blocks an IP address from people who are sending bots to try and sell us stuff we don't want!

We are getting the same issue! yet, it's 2024 and coming into 2025!

@Shopify  WTH heck here. Seriously, it's well documented that you all are selling/leasing out our contact and store information to buyers. STOP NOW!

Well, what's that telling us shopify owners? They are selling our information without our consent. So much for the Data Protection Act 2018!

It is a little insane. I have a small gemstone store, and I opened a shopify, because it was cheaper and easier than Wix. I recieved 112 spam messages on messenger the first day about marketing. If I wanted marketing help, I'd ask for it. I don't know how to get it to stop, but if you find out, please let me know. They're going after my social media posts now, so I'm going to have to cancel my shopify store.

are many people in this thread possibly using info@<domain> ?

I was wondering the same, then I realized that info is a very common email alias
