I can't transfer ownership to a member in my organization

I have been trying for hours, to transfer a shopify store I developed and I am the current owner, to my client. My client is a User with "Legacy access". I use Settings > Users > click my name as the owner > three dots > View store > Change Ownership > enter the my clients email > click "Change store ownership". I get the 6 digit code sent to my phone and nothing happens. I try clicking the "Change store ownership" button again but nothing happens. It does not show "Transfer in progress when in General settings. Thanks

Hi @Driver3

I'm Kate from PageFly, a Shopify Landing Page Builder app. I know how frustrating it can be when things don’t work as expected, especially when you're trying to hand over a store to your client. Let me help you troubleshoot this!

1. Check Your Client's Access

  • It sounds like your client has "Legacy access," which might be causing the problem. Try updating their permissions:
    • Go to Settings > Users and Permissions in your Shopify admin.
    • Find your client’s account and update their role to match Shopify’s latest settings.

You may want to review Shopify’s resources on Transferring Development Stores to Clients.

2. Fix Browser Issues

  • Sometimes, browser glitches can cause buttons to stop working. Here’s what you can try:
    • Clear your browser’s cache and cookies.
    • Use a different browser or open Shopify in an incognito/private window.

3. Check for Developer Preview Mode

  • If your store is in Developer Preview mode, transfers aren’t allowed. You can check this under Settings > Plans. If Developer Preview is enabled, switch to a standard Shopify plan first.

4. Match the Billing Currency

  • Make sure the store’s billing currency matches your client’s payment method. If they don’t match, your client might not be able to add a credit card and accept the transfer. You can update this under Settings > Billing.

5. Follow the Transfer Steps Again

  • Let’s make sure the steps you’re following are correct:
    1. Go to Settings > Users and Permissions in your Shopify admin.
    2. Under the Store owner section, click Transfer ownership.
    3. Enter your client’s email and confirm the transfer.
    4. Check your phone for the 6-digit code and enter it.
  • Once you’ve done this, your client should receive an email to accept ownership. Remind them to check their spam or junk folder if they don’t see it right away.

6. Test with Another Account

  • If it’s still not working, try creating a temporary staff account and transfer ownership to that account first. If it works, you can try transferring to your client again.

7. Contact Shopify Support

  • If none of this works, the issue might need Shopify’s help. Contact their support team, explain what’s happening, and share the steps you’ve tried. They’ll be able to dig deeper and help you fix it.

I hope this helps you solve the issue and transfer the store smoothly! Let me know if you have more questions.

Best,
Kate

Hi Kate thanks for the help. Your reply got me part of the way there. It turns out because I moved the site to a paid plan while developing, Shopify's Security Team has to make the transfer. They said it could take weeks. Wow! This is going to be a fun conversation with my client.

Heads up to anyone out there. If your moving your dev site to a paid plan while still developing, because you need paid apps, etc... make sure you transfer ownership first.

Regards,
