All things Shopify and commerce
Everything in upload works except I need to find out what the excel header name should be versus "Province" - we need "state". When I try to use the header name "state" get an error. If I use "province" excel sheet imports all info. for customer except their state location is blank.
All of our customers are U.S. based and we need to know how to import their state name?
What is the solution?
Thanks!
Hi @eBeeLuv, happy to help out here.
It's likely not the header but rather your CSV requiring a specific "state code" to avoid the CSV error.
Including specific countries, regions, states, and provinces use specific codes known as ISO 3166-1.
To find a list of the current codes, refer to ISO_3166-1: Current_codes. If you’re located in the United States or Canada, then you can find a code for your state, or province on these lists:
Please let me know if that resolves the issue for you! When you've completed your import, you'll be ready to dive into creating email marketing campaigns. Here's a great introductory resource to get you started.

Ren, thanks for the reply. I figured it out by exporting the .csv out of shopify so I could view what I was missing. Tweaked my columns to add "Province", "Province Code", and "Country Code". I was exporting from another platform that did not spell out the name of the states (i.e. Ohio) and state abbreviations (OH) were only used. I thought no way that I could add the spelled out names manually it would take way too long to add spelled our state names to "Province" column.
So, I simply added these 3 columns "Province", "Province Code" and "Country Code"and left the "Province" column blank and uploaded the sheet. Worked awesome and everything uploaded without any glitches.
Thanks again - hopefully this will help U.S. based customers know how to upload customer .csv files since Shopify is a Canadian Company and we don't have provinces in the states.
Thanks so much for returning with an update and feedback on how that went - I'm glad it all worked!
In addition to this thread, I think this is a great opportunity to submit this to the appropriate content teams to request some official documentation on the process for future merchants in similar circumstances.

Hello! I have this issue to and want to mimic what you did for it to work. Where did you list out the US States then?
I tricked the system - under the column Province - you need to list the states out, Florida, Ohio, District of Columbia, Maryland etc. for the Province code column use the abbreviated state name - i.e. MN, OH, PA, DC, MD, etc.
Just treat the columns that mention province and think of the province as a state term instead
