All things Shopify and commerce
I can't believe I am asking this because surely I am missing a very easy selection somewhere...Is it possible to sort customers by name alphabetically?
Hi there @shopwaw.
It is not possible to sort customers alphabetically, currently they can only be sorted by last updated, amount spent, total order value, last order date and date added as a customer.
I can definitely understand that this feature would be useful though, so I would like to add your request for this feature for a future platform update. While I cannot guarantee the change will be implemented, all platform changes/updates are made based upon your feedback. Thank you!

Hi - we have over 1,000 customers on our site. When a customer rings me wanting to change his email address (and cannot do it himself), I find I am unable to easily do that.
It is amazing that I cannot sort customers by name.
Before Shopify our website was over 15 years old, and clunky - BUT - it allowed me to sort customers alpahabetically. Your other sort options are of no use to me.
Can you please add that simple option urgently?
Thank yo
Don
It seems to me that listing customers alphabetically is common sense and a basic. Very frustrating.
I need to merge many multiple listings of customers in our system due to repeat entries; it would be SO much
easier to do it alphabetically.
I agree with the other commenters... this is super frustrating that we can't sort customers by name. I hope this is fixed in the future.
Pretty ridiculous that this simple feature is missing.
I would also like to chime into this conversation. How in the world can a store manage a few thousand customers? This is a super simple request. Please bump this again as a vital upgrade.
Hi Ivy,
Can you give us an update on this platform change? Like other users, I can't believe it's not possible to sort by customer name and have to assume there is a reason why it's not available. Please know that it would be very helpful -- and I only have 107 customers at this time!
Thank you,
SHura
Hello, @shuragat.
Thanks so much for reaching out about this. I am afraid I do not have access to any updates relating to possible future platform updates - My role is to collect feedback and ensure the correct teams know what updates are wanted by our merchants. I have submitted that you want to see customer sorting added as a priority, and I also just want to reassure you that as a store owner myself I absolutely see how useful this would be!
I cannot guarantee when or even if this change will be implemented, but I do want you and everyone else here on this thread to know that I have heard you and have passed this feedback onto the team who do have the power to implement these changes. Thank you again for your valuable feedback!

This is definitely a necessary feature. It's great we can now merge customers but how are we supposed to find duplicate accounts if we can't sort alphabetically?
Thanks-
Stacey
This is a necessary feature. There isn’t much benefit of having the ability to merge customers without being able to sort them.
It seems like a simple request and important need.
This thread began back in December of 2021. Seems like more than enough time to address it.
Hello Ivy,
It has been 1 year since your last response, and over 2 years since this (simple) issue was brought your attention. What is the current timeframe when we, as PAYING CUSTOMERS, can expect to see some progress made on the "ABILITY TO SORT CUSTOMERS ALPHABETICALLY". This is so ridiculous that it should not even have to be a request. Shopify seems to be the only website and business that hasn't the mental capacity to either
A.) MAKE AN ALPHABETICAL SORT BUTTON or,
B.) Tell their customers why they didn't make an alphabetical sort button to begin with or,
C.) Why the STILL haven't created an alphabetical sort button.
Thank you, and I know we would all appreciate a swift response.
"customer sporting" ??????????????????
We'd love to see this implemented, especially for sorting the customer list and finding if there are duplicate customer accounts.
Hi Ivy, are there any updates regarding being able to sort customer first names in alphabetical order? or do you recommend a work around within the shopify settings without having to export a csv file to then do this basic sorting. Thank You!
Hello, Ivy. Could you please update us as to why alphabetical sort has not been implemented yet, and when it will be? Thank you.
With great respect, this is an incredibly basic requirement and that it has been over three years since the initial request is mind boggling. I add my name to the lengthy list of the customers of Shopify requiring this basic and obvious functionality. I would even be happy if I could create sorts in Views, but that is missing as well. It is a necessity when needing to do updates to customer records.
I also can’t believe that this isn’t possible.
Shopify, please fix this!
I suppose the question is why was this depreciated? It's a simple sorting algorithm that any knowledgeable data base manager should be able to re-implement.
It would be great if it could be alphabetically by first name instead of last name as well.
How is this not possible? This is like sorting 101.
How would Shopify suggest we look for and consolidate duplicate customers if we can't sort them by name?

The answer is that Shopify does not suggest that you look for and consolidate duplicate customers.
Because we use their customer accounts to keep track of our customer rewards program I've been struggling with duplicate customers for a while. I've come to the conclusion that the only way to deal with the issue is to address each customer only if a duplicate account is noticed during checkout. Then we make a note and we'll take care of it later.
I would also suggest that you ignore any duplicate accounts without contact information (only the customer's name) as they'll just be recreated by the POS from credit card info.
Hey Noah, it's Tobe from Regios Automatic Discounts.
Shopify recently added a feature where you can merge customers. Have you already tried using it with your customer rewards program? It could possibly save you some time manually de-duplicating customers.
As far as the POS recreating duplicate customers, I think you still might be able to merge the name-only accounts with other customers?

It’s pretty ridiculous to have to do this, but I’ve found that if you export your entire customer base to Excel (it defaults to the first 50 customers, so make sure you select all 50+ customers) you can then do an alpha sort in Excel and use that list to eliminate dupes in Shopify.
Honestly, this is the most basic sort option offered by literally every company but Shopify. I am constantly disappointed by the lack of basic features. In addition to not having alpha sort as an option, we find that when a customer purchases more than a certain number of items, their receipt excludes items purchased, causing utter confusion. On top of that, when ringing a customer with a lot of items, we can only see a limited number of their items in the cart. Poor software development.
HOW IS THIS NOT BEING MADE AVAILABLE TO SHOPIFY USERS? Is there some reason that we don't get this extremely extremely useful feature? I really cant believe there is so many of us here looking for this feature with no current updates...
