Is "err._domainkey" as a CNAME record expected for Authenticate Domain?

Hi, I have a domain hosted by third party and the store domain has been set up already.

Now I want to authenticate the domain (example.com) for sender email (support@example.com).

In settings-notifications, after clicking "authenticate domain", the instruction showed four CNAME records to be added -

  • err._domainkey
  • err2._domainkey
  • err3._domainkey
  • mailererr._domainkey

As someone knowing a bit of coding myself, this looks like an error in the Shopify backend, but there is no error message to the user how to fix or how Shopify can help.

I have already set up email hosting with Google WorkSpace (example.com) so Gmail works.

Plus, I have setup another stores before and didn't see "err" in this step. I'm worried that I might have messed something up by going backwards having WorkSpace setup before authenticating the domain, or is third-party domain and email hosting not compatible?

Please help, thank you so much in advance!

Hi there!

I've had just a similar query and contacted Shopify Support as the settings didn't make much sense or just sounded wrong... I was told the settings are correct, and now I've put them in my DNS settings and I got the domain authenticated successfully. What made me worried was that the settings sounded very weird, and as I didn't find the exact CNAME settings online it made me think they were wrong.

My guess is that they are using a number of domains that are made with different 3 letter combinations, and your just happens to be "err" rather than meaning error? Would explain why this post is the only one you can find when searching the internet for "mailererr._domainkey" - and same for the three letter variation that we had on our store's settings.

Thanks for replying. Yea, we got ours resolved a few weeks ago - as you said, it works as expected but "err" definitely seems problematic for technical people like us. Hope Shopify doesn't put such confusing domain keys in their config.
