All things Shopify and commerce
We are rebuilding our account pages, and from a perspective of future-proofing, should we focus our efforts on the new customer account pages even though they are more restrictive? Does anyone know if the legacy account page will eventually be sunsetting?

Hey @aazani!
Shopify has confirmed that the legacy customer accounts type will eventually be deprecated, but has not released any information about a timeline for this. This is mostly my personal opinion, but I would not expect legacy accounts to be fully removed for at least a couple of years, although it is possible it could happen sooner.
If you're not already aware of this, Shopify did just recently release support for customer account extensions (https://www.shopify.com/blog/introducing-customer-account-extensions), so apps can now help increase the customizability, however it is true the new customer accounts are still not as customizable as legacy accounts which can be fully customized through the theme.

Shopify has indeed indicated they are going to sunset "Legacy Customer Accounts" but I wanted to chime in on this thread on the off chance someone from Shopify sees it but this is a horrible plan and may be the reason I jump ship. My entire customer experience is built around the way customer accounts are currently set up, and while there are are benefits to the new "Customer Accounts" the lack of liquid customization is a deal breaker, and I know my customers are going to hate having to enter a six digit code every time they login because I know I hate having to do that on so many platforms. Having a unique account for my site increases brand loyalty and the overall experience. This is going to be a disaster. Please leave this feature in place for those of us that have built our businesses around it!
I agree, its a horrible idea. Forcing customers to login to their email account to find a code will be annoying, I mean, what if the email fails to deliver? What if the email goes to their junk mail and they cant find it? What if they aren't logged into their email account and have forgotten their password? What if their email account has been hacked? There are also other issues like not being able to access order history, loss of stored addresses for faster checkout. A lot of my customers aren't tech savvy, so a new login process will no doubt cause confusion, more requests for support, and loss of sales. Yes there are benefits like customer credits, but the negative impact like loss of sales far out weighs any positive. I'm sticking to legacy accounts until Shopify makes the new account experience better for customers.
I am with you on this as well. Our account page is filled with custom content for different types of customers. It will be impossible to replicate the same experience even with apps, and not just to mention the amount of time it is going to take to build those apps. But this was also my issue with checkout.liquid and Shopify Scripts being depreciated as well. It may be future proofing their end but at the cost of developers sanity and customer experience. I can't even change the background color of the header on the account page to match my theme colors without an app. 3 lines of CSS would turn into 10 hours of app building.
Shopify developer here 👋 - same. I have a number of client's sites with liquid customisations on the customer pages which are absolutely vital to my their businesses - I can guarantee that apps will be unable to provide the flexibility required to replicate these customisations. I've got a couple of Shopify Plus B2B clients who have been forced down the new Customer accounts path and have had so much bad feedback on the login process and deliverability issues with login codes. One of them is in the process of moving away from Shopify, and I have no doubt there will be others once Legacy accounts are sunset they are forced to use Customer accounts.
I feel like this is an update that no-one actually asked for. Please keep Legacy accounts alive Shopify!
