Issues with Random Tag Order in Exports

Hi,

I’m facing an issue regarding the "Tags" column in the product exports from Shopify. We use tags to categorize products with critical information like Internal sku, country, and product categories. However, the tags in the exported file seem to appear in a random order across different products. For example, sometimes the country is in the 5th position in one product and in the 3rd position for another, making it very difficult to organize the data effectively.

Here’s the situation in more detail:

  • When exporting my product catalog, the "Tags" column contains multiple pieces of information in a comma-separated list.
  • These tags are not consistently ordered across different products (e.g., country information appears in different positions for different products).
  • We want to standardize and arrange these tags in a predictable order to make it easier to process and filter our data.

I have already reached out to Shopify Support, and they mentioned that the tags are identified and ordered based on Shopify’s system default, which may not be customizable directly within the admin interface. However, they suggested that it might be possible to achieve the desired order by injecting custom code within the admin.

Questions I have:

  1. Is there a way to bulk edit or rearrange tags for multiple products at once to ensure they are standardized and ordered consistently in the export file?
  2. Is the randomness in the tags' positioning (comma-separated) due to the export process itself?
  3. Is there any app or feature in Shopify that could help organize and export these tags in a more structured way?

If anyone has faced a similar issue or has a solution, I’d greatly appreciate your input! Thanks in advance!

The order of each "Tag" in the comma-separated list appears to be alphabetical. So in the export, each tag may be in a different position if the products don't all have the same tags assigned to them.

This may not achieve what you're looking for, but in the exported file, you could use excel to convert each tag in the comma-separated list to have its own column in the file (ie the Tags "Shirts, Hats" previously in one cell will be converted to a separate cell for "Shirts" and separate cell for "Hats" in the same row of the file.

To do that, below are the steps (using Excel):

Select the Column (you may want to duplicate the original column 1st for future reference):
- Highlight the column containing the text you want to split.
- Go to the Data tab on the top ribbon.
- Click on Text to Columns.
- Select Delimited as the file type and click Next.
- Check the box for "Comma" and "Space" as the delimiter, and click Next.

- Click "Text" for column data format.
- Click Finish, and Excel will split the text into separate columns.
