John Smith From Google - UTM Google Shopper - Creating false abandoned carts

I am using Google Shopper to push our products from Shopify store into Google Shopper.  Google Shopper seems to have a bot that constantly crawls our products, adds an item to a cart, goes to check out and creates an account variant of "John Smith" - johnsmith+1222@gmail.com or some other number.

Shopify doesn't track user-agent or IP address for abandoned orders. So I installed 3rd part apps to discover and found the IP addresses all belong to the Google IP allocation.

It's frustrating as this is creating many abandoned carts which throw off the statistics and analytics for the site, creating accounts, kicks off automation scripts, etc, etc, etc.

Does anyone else have this issue?

This is something Google is doing to verify that the public prices are the same after adding the product to the cart:

We don't have this issue ourselves, but I can understand it's frustrating. To be able to block traffic before arriving in your store, and before Shopify tracks it in the stats, you'll need to set up Cloudflare or something similar.

I would think it might hurt your SEO if you decide to block the google bot, but at least that's how to do it. Shopify Support will just recommend you to hire an expert to help with this, but setting up Cloudflare and blocking the IP is what will work.

Since Shopify Apps get loaded in the Shopify header, any blocking apps from there will still be included in the stats.

Now they are using a different email address and name from this IP address. Also the following address and information is being entered.  Beware

Yup....

always Abandons carts.

I have had a John Smith from the US once and John Smith from Canada twice.

johnsmithus.1801@gmail.com whose address was the GooglePlex in Cali, and

john smith, 111 Richmond Street West, Toronto ON M5H 2G4, Canada (Also Google HQ)

So as far as I can see, this is QUALITY CONTROL from Google for anyone with a Merchant account.  They are probably verifying item listings and shipping policies. The best control against listing fraud is to try to buy. I got crawled when I opened sales in Canada, and crawled again when I opened sales to the US through Google.

At least the pattern is consistent.  In your Google Analytics accounts you should be able to filter these out as NOT actual transactions so they don't count in your stats.

If you are just starting out it can be frustrating to see several hundred dollars get abandoned though.

Cheers!

I just had it happen. We're just opened our website and our first order was the bot. Sort of pisses me off.

We are just now seeing this in our store... or I'm just noticing. We use Omnisend, we don't have a recapcha, and wondering what the general solution is to suppress but not delete?

If you are using Google Shopping, if you suppress, you will get suspended from Google Merchant Center.

If you signed up to Google Merchant Center, in one of Google's policies you accepted, it states that Google will check pricing in the checkout. Manually and using bots.

Hi, I attach the response from Google support regarding the problem of the Famous John Smith BOT
Dear Salvatore,
Thank you for contacting gTech Customer Experience regarding the Merchant Center. I hope he's all right.
I understand your concern regarding your Merchant Center account. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. Don't worry, I would be happy to help you. We inform you that it is not advisable to control/restrict Google bots on any web page. However, it may reduce the crawling speed from your website's backend, which may help solve your problem; as it is not recommended to completely block crawling access for our system to your website. To resolve this issue, you can contact your web developer, who may help you reduce the crawling speed and resolve the issue. You may also share the article with your web developer to get better insights as advised by the concerned department.
