All things Shopify and commerce
I plan to run my own online shop using Shopify to sell clothing or pet supplies. I have another full-time job for now but would like to run this online shop on the side, and if it goes well, I can quit my other job to run the shop full-time. I plan to run this shop while working from home, but I would like to be location independent. I don't intend to hire any employees
-what licenses and permits do I need?
-Should I trademark my company name and logo or should I wait?
should I hire a lawyer who can help me with these and other legal requirements?
Hey @rodmunch,
As a Shopify support specialist, I cannot provide specific legal advice. However, I can give you some general information that may help you decide on what steps to take next.
In summary, you should research the licenses and permits required in your local area, consider trademarking your company name and logo, and seek legal advice to ensure that you are compliant with all legal requirements.

Thanks for the reply. I just want to try out dropshipping and get a few sales first before deciding if I'm going to commit to spending alot of time on the shopify online store. I still need to get the business license, trademarking, and other legal requirements first?
@rodmunch This is all up to you. It is still important to take care of the legal requirements, even if you are just testing the waters with dropshipping and only plan to sell a few items. Having the proper licenses in place can help protect you from legal issues and ensure that you are operating your business legally and ethically.
In addition, some suppliers and platforms may require you to provide proof of a valid business license and other legal documentation before you can work with them. So it's a good idea to take care of these matters upfront to avoid any potential roadblocks down the line. That being said, some legal requirements may vary depending on the size and scope of your business.
