All things Shopify and commerce
I own a cottage bakery where I personally deliver orders, and have my local delivery set up with order minimums, and sets of delivery radii, and the dollar amount for delivery based on each delivery radius set. I had someone order from 10.6 miles away, and got charged for the 5 mile radius set. Is there any way that we can calculate delivery distance based on route vs. radius? Where I live, the roads don't always make sense, and a residence that may be within the 5 mile radius, is 10 miles or more via route.
Hi, @dvlwearsparsley
Greetings, and thanks for posting!
With Shopify's native Local Delivery features, the radius is determined "as the crow flies," meaning the shortest direct distance. Our system uses Google Maps API to determine this. Thus, if you feel there is an error in the calculation, please reach out to our live team to investigate.
However, in the case the radius is correct, but isn't working for your needs, you may want to either increase your radius, or consider using a third party delivery application like Zapiet. Which will allow you to more finely tune your desired settings.
Can Shopify please update their settings to allow owners to choose if the distance is measure by radius (or "as the crow flies") or actual driving milage (or the route taken on Google Maps)? We are in the same boat. Customers are not getting charges for the correct amount of mileage actually driven by our delivery drivers.
Hi, @JBsBarnyard
Thanks for joining the conversation!
While I can't guarantee the change, I will absolutely submit the feedback to our developers on your behalf.
Hello Sky. I didn't know that many people had the same issue. It is a problem. If SHOPIFY offers a delivery radius capability, looking for a third party app to manage doesn't seem like a good idea. more when in the Delivery troubleshooting Shopify mentions that a third party app may cause problems. Also many apps, as I understand, do not have any way to indicate price for the radius since the checkout is restricted. In my case after I updated to the SHOPIFY 2.0 the delivery radius started to fault. My address has being verify by google so that is not the issue. A delivery that is 7 miles away the system is charging the rate for the "up to 5 miles" instead of the one that is from 5 miles up to 8 miles. Same for a delivery that is 23 miles away the system is charging the 15 mile rate. I need help. This is affecting my business. My web page is www.fullifebakery.com.
Can you please help me.

Hello Summer I do not know if your read what I said after to Skye here is a copy: Hello Sky, after going through Google maps and establishing a 5 miles radius, the calculations are correct. See, as you said the app calculates a straight line (Shortest route) from point A (origin) to point B (destination), but the rout itself is longer in my case 0.8 miles longer and in other cases more than a mile, and that is why the difference in the rate calculations. Before the Shopify app used to take the google routes available and not a straight line, therefore calculating the correct rate. Is there any way to fix this so the app selects a rout, any, instead of a straight line?
The rout issue has no solution. I have talked to support as you said few times and in all honesty sometimes they do not know about it, is like the follow a script and have limited knowledge. Before the upgrade to SHOPIFY 2.0 the webpage use to calculate the correct distance. Now with this approach of straight line things are different. I understand that this approach (Straight Line) reduces the amount of calculations or probabilities to examine therefore less server space, etc which increases cost for SHOPIFY. It will be nice if the rout approach, based on google maps, can be used.
Hi there @gbrillembourg!
Thank you for sharing that additional context.
I understand that you are experiencing discrepancies with your delivery radius and costs. I will be sure to relay these details over to our developers to see if we can offer some more clarification or update the internal system. While I won't be able to share any updates here, they will be updated in the Shopify Changelog.
