Mandatory Variant selection

Is there a way, if there is please share how, to make a customer be forced to select a variant/color of the product before adding it to the cart, how to make it so that there is no pre selected variant that gets added to the cart by default if the customer only clicks add to cart rather than selecting a variant? My issue is that my customer base is older people and they have difficulties changing the variant after its added to the basket, they try pressing on the item in the cart in efforts to change its color/variant. also maybe there is a way to add variant selector inside the cart page? Or are the products locked once in cart? Please help me out, all the info i found is either outdated or has no replies or solutions. Thanks in advance
