All things Shopify and commerce
I have looked around and have not had much luck with finding a complete answer, perhaps because I am new to Shopify. I am customizing the Debut theme and want to change the words "Sold Out" to "Coming Soon", So far I have managed to change it when you click on the product itself (https://www.myfavebag.com/products/the-umbrella) but I cannot figure out how to change it on the thumbnail (https://www.myfavebag.com/collections/all/the-brelly). Can you let me know where I might check so I can fix it?
Thanks!
Hi there, April!
Alexa here with the Shopify team.
To change the words "Sold out" to "Coming soon" you can visit Online store > Themes > Actions > Edit language and in the search query, type in "Sold out". You'll want to change the "Sold out" under the category Products/ Products.
I hope you found this helpful! Let us know if we can further assist you in any way.

Hello there,
I've tried to do just this but am having no luck in getting the wording to change from "Sold out" to "Coming Soon". Please advise!
Our website is https://eloros.com
Thank you!
Patrick
Hi, @patrickhitches.
Helen here from Shopify Support, and I’m here to help!
I am going to first thoroughly illustrate below the steps to take to make this change, to be sure it is being applied to the correct setting.
Go to ‘Online Store > Themes > Actions > Edit languages’ as seen below:
Once in the language settings, go to the Products tab. It should look something like this:
And then scroll down to the Product section and edit the ‘Sold Out’ box to say ‘Coming Soon’ here:
Lastly, don’t forget to click SAVE on the top right hand side of the page:
Please confirm that these are the steps you have taken. If the changes are still not taking effect, let me know and we’ll get to the bottom of this!

Hi,
I'm trying to do the same. I've followed all the steps but the changes aren't appearing on my website. How long do you normally have to wait to see them live?
Hey, @MidnightHare!
The changes should take effect immediately, so let’s figure out what’s going on here. In order to troubleshoot further, please reply back with answers to the following questions:

Hi Helen,
Your suggestion works but how can we remove the price?
Thank you!
Raisa
That’s great, @Raisa_27! I’m glad to hear you were able to change the wording of your ‘Sold Out’ button to ‘Coming Soon’.
Are you wanting to hide the prices on all of your products? Or just the ones that are ‘Sold Out/Coming Soon’?
There is a tutorial here with the steps to edit the coding of your theme in order to hide all of your product prices. However, if you are wanting to hide just the 'Sold Out/Coming Soon’ ones, then this will require some assistance.
Which theme are you using? If it’s a free Shopify-made theme, then I’m happy to escalate the customization request to our theme department for you. However, if your theme is made by a third party, then I recommend reaching out to a Shopify Expert, and they’ll be able to implement this for you.
Let me know, and we can proceed as needed!

Gotcha! Thanks for clarifying, @Raisa_27.
Grid is a third party theme developed by a company called Pixel Union. Therefore, you will need to reach out to a Shopify Expert to implement this customization.
Good luck! Let me know if I can help with anything else.

Hi Helen,
Can you help me hide prices of specific products on my store?
Welcome to the Community, @Kelvin1988! I’m happy to point you in the right direction on how to go about doing this.
As mentioned above, if you are comfortable with coding, there is a tutorial for hiding all of your product prices in order to make the customization yourself. However, if it is just the price of certain products that you would like hidden, then this will require some assistance to implement.
Which theme are you using? If It’s a Shopify-made theme, then we'd be happy to check with our Theme department to see if this is a customization they are able to support. While we’re not able to provide account-specific support via the Shopify Community at this time in order to coordinate with the Theme department for you, please visit the Shopify Help Center and log in to your account to create a support request for it there.
Alternatively, if you are using a third party theme, then please reach out to a Shopify Expert in the Experts Marketplace to discuss your customization requirements, and arrange to hire an Expert to help you with this.
Let me know if I can help with anything else!

Hi, when i change sold out to coming soon, does the quantity has to be 0?
Hi, @Vicky71! Yes that’s correct. The inventory for your product needs to be zero, in order for the 'Coming soon' button to display on that product's page.
The ‘Sold out’ button is coded into your theme to display only when a product is out of stock (ie. the inventory quantity is zero). So, even if you change the wording on the button to ‘Coming soon’, the functionality is still the same.
Additionally, also ensure the Continue selling when out of stock box is not checked, as seen below. Otherwise this will override the inventory value of zero, and not display your ‘Coming soon’ button for that product on your storefront.
Hope this helps!

Hi everyone,
I read through this thread and managed to change the sold out to coming soon. However, I also wish to omit the prices of the coming out product. I'm using the debut theme.
Thanks!
Hi, @marianamsmith. Thanks for reaching out! In one of my responses earlier within this thread on 10-20-2020, I provided some options for how to do this. To summarize what was suggested:

Hi Helen,
Thank you for sharing! This was very helpful - but now it turned actual product that I won't be restocking to "sold out products". Can we have both sold out and coming soon exist? I have new product coming but I don't want customers to think we'll be restocking actual sold out items.
Merchants that want this customization or a preorder system can contact me at paull.newton+shopifyforums@gmail.com with store url , budget, and use case details(reference this url too).

The translation method is a 1 to 1, so it's either sold out or coming soon.
If you want to have more product statuses you need advanced customization.
Shopify does have a pre-order customization you could subvert to be "coming soon" instead.

Hey, @jhirae. You’re welcome! I’m glad you have found this thread helpful.
Good news, as mentioned above, there are solutions for being able to have some products as “Sold out” and others as “Coming soon”. To summarize, the options are:

Hi Alex,
Your suggestion works, but how can we remove the Price?
Thanks
Raisa
Hey, @kathyrossy. Thanks for reaching out, and welcome to the Community!
Changing the wording on out of stock items from ‘Sold out’ to ‘Coming soon’ using the language editor won’t allow you to pick and choose which products to change the wording on, I’m afraid; It will change it for all products that are out of stock. However, it is still possible to be able to have some out of stock items marked as ‘Sold out’, while others as ‘Coming soon’.
To do this, you will not change the wording in your language editor, so that when a product is out of stock it displays as ‘Sold out’. Then, you will use a third party app like Coming Soon Products Preorders which will allow you to identify specific products as ‘Coming soon’.
If you are unfamiliar with using third party apps from the Shopify App Store, you can find how to install, uninstall and find support for them in our Help Docs Apps for your Shopify store.
Hope this helps!

Hey @Helen,
I'm looking to accomplish the same thing as @kathyrossy and only want some of my sold out products to be marked as "Coming Soon." I don't wish to remove the prices, but I want the button to remain inactive in the same way it would for a sold out product. I'd really rather not get an app since I'll only need to do this for the next few weeks and then may possibly need to do it again in the future, but it's not a definite so paying for an app doesn't seem worthwhile.
Could this be achieved instead by creating a new product template in the theme code? I'm using Debut and have been able to create a new product template for pre-ordered products in the past by following a tutorial and was also able to figure out how to get rid of the "Add to Cart" button entirely on a single product by making a new template and then just playing around with the code.
I wanted to know if there's any existing tutorials for this before I tried to figure it out myself?
Hey, @stephanierobo. I can totally understand that. While we don’t have a tutorial for this exact customization for vintage Shopify-made themes, creating a custom button setting is a supported theme customization since you are using a free Shopify theme.
If you would like the Shopify Theme team to help you with this, we’ll need to access your account in order to determine your eligibility for design time and then escalate the request to them. While we’re not able to provide account-specific support via the Shopify Community at this time, we’d be happy to continue assisting you through live chat, email, or callback. Please visit the Shopify Help Center and log in to your account to create a support request.
All the best!

Hi @Helen,
Thanks so much for getting back! I ended up figuring out how to change the button via the method I suggested above (I also had to make a change in one of the Locales files to fix an error message that kept popping up, so it was technically just one extra step than the process for setting up a pre-order product template).
I'm now looking into also changing the text from "Sold Out" to "Coming Soon" on the product grid view (but only for certain products, not for all products) and am wondering if this would also be a supported theme customization that Shopify support could help me with? I found a suggestion from @Byron3 on this forum https://community.shopify.com/c/shopify-design/changing-sold-out-to-coming-soon-but-only-for-certain... and have come at least as far as figuring out that a change has to be made in both the product-card-grid.liquid and product-card-list.liquid files (for the Debut theme). However, it seems like the code for the "Sold Out" text in the Debut theme is much more succinct than that for Minimalist (probably because the words "Sold Out" only appear as a single line of text on the site itself as opposed to a badge), so I'm having a hard time figuring it out for my theme.
The other issue I'm having is that the code in this tutorial requires changing the product type of the select items to "Coming Soon" so that the text being displayed in place of "Sold Out" is that of the product type. I rely heavily on the product type feature for sorting my clothing so I can't just change a bunch of random tops and bottoms to "coming soon" because it would severely disorganize my catalog. Is there a way to assign it based on the new "coming-soon" product template I've created or even a collection or something?
Hey, @stephanierobo. That’s great! I’m happy to hear you were able to figure out how to change the button. Feel free to provide more detailed information as to how you went about doing it, in hopes that it may help other merchants that discover this thread.
Theme coding is out of my scope of knowledge I’m afraid, so I am not able to advise on your coding questions. However, I recommend reaching out to our live support so that a Support Advisor can submit your request to the Theme department and we can find out for sure if this is something they are able to customize for you. For reference, more information about the type of customizations that are possible using your design time are found in the post: What Can Be Covered in Free Design Time.
Alternatively, there is also always the option of reaching out to a Shopify Expert as well, if by chance this is not something that the Shopify Theme department is able to assist with. You can read more about the Experts Marketplace and how to go about working with an Expert in the Help Doc Hiring help.
Let me know how it goes!
