All things Shopify and commerce
Hi, Im going to setting up my text shop & see winter editions has fancy new options - which I will need, plus the search connects to them. Its not out yet (any idea of timing?) so I cant see how it looks but I can only go on my metafields in admin currently.
BUT if I use metafields for options as per winter editions theres going to be thousands & thousands of them. There is no way we can use any kind of excel tool to edit them - thats every time we add or change a product!
Is there any way to control which metafields (in sets or individually) we see in the admin of the product page? Im new to Shopify but have used my metafields to set up (test) custom filters), & already Ive got a long list on each product. Too long, actually. Half arent even relevant on half of the products!
Not sure how it would work but Id like to rearrange the order they are in, apply some to all products, & then only have specific ones from specific groups (product type & brand probably) on others.
Im going to get a bulk edit addon anyway (if anyone has any recs) but using it for adding new products is crazy. Importing via spreadsheets is going to lead to huge errors. We usually clone products then tweak option sets & filters as we go, & currently on xcart non filter options are in pre set groups by brand & type.

That is super useful, thanks so much. Ill be using some as standard fields on all products so pinning them will be extremely useful.
Hello,
You can set up which metafields show up on the product page in the Shopify admin by:
You will now see a list of up to 20 'pinned' metafield definitions that you can edit:
If a metafield is 'pinned', it means that it will show up at the bottom of the product detail page in the admin. You can click on the pin icon to toggle this and drag the metafields up and down to change their order. This applies to all products though you can't configure different orders for different products.
In Winter Editions 24 it seems Shopify is adding a standard set of metafields to each product category. We'll have to wait to see what the end result is but this is how it looks in the video:
(For a more technical overview of Shopify's product taxonomy I would recommend checking out this Github repository.)
Finally, if you're looking for an add-on to help with the bulk editing I would recommend checking out our Ablestar Bulk Product Editor. You can edit metafields with a spreadsheet (with a 1-click undo, a view of the progress and without renaming columns) or you can also edit them in bulk directly in the app:
Hopefully that helps some, happy to answer any other questions you might have.
Best,
Daniel
