Migrating from BigCommerce to Shopify

Any assistance would be most appreciated. 🙂
I am in the process of moving from BigCommerce, and the main question is about setting up 301 redirects for images. BigCommerce uses a CDN so no images are under my domain name. However, the 301 redirects use the domain name by default and cannot be updated to the CDN.

How is this done when I do not have control over the CDN? Does anybody have experience with this? Thank you in advance for your time!

Hello @Cathy44,

Here's a brief response for you:

"When moving from BigCommerce to another platform, setting up 301 redirects for images can be challenging if they're hosted on a CDN. How can I achieve this, given that I don't have control over the CDN? Does anyone have experience with this? Thank you in advance!"

Would you like additional details or advice on this process?

Best Regards,
James Goff

Hi @Cathy44 ,

Moving from BigCommerce to another platform while maintaining 301 redirects for images can indeed be tricky, especially when the images are served from a CDN that isn't under your control. Here's how you can approach the issue:

  • Redirect Domain-based URLs

    • If BigCommerce images were accessed via your domain (e.g., https://yourdomain.com/image.jpg), set up 301 redirects on your new platform to point to the new image URLs.
  • CDN-Specific URLs

    • Since BigCommerce uses its CDN (e.g., https://cdn.bigcommerce.com/image.jpg), you can’t control or redirect these directly. Instead, host new images on your platform and update links across your site.
  • Use a Reverse Proxy (Optional)

    • Intercept requests to old URLs and redirect them to new ones, if feasible.
  • Preemptive Fixes

    • Update content with domain-based image URLs before migrating to avoid reliance on CDN links.

Hi @oscprofessional - Thank you for your assistance. I was guessing there was no easy workaround. Of course, I have uploaded the images to Shopify and, in some cases, upgraded images (I have been on BigCommerce since 2013).

When migrating from BigCommerce and dealing with images hosted on a CDN, setting up 301 redirects for images can be tricky since you don’t have control over the CDN. One option is to create a redirect that points to the CDN’s URL for each image, but it requires you to know the structure of your CDN’s URLs. Cart2Cart can help migrate most of your data smoothly, but for images specifically, it’s best to work with your CDN provider to ensure proper redirects or use a custom solution to map the old image URLs to the new ones on Shopify.
