New customers not subscribed. Is it spam?!

Hello,

I have had a bunch of people's names added to my 'customers' section along with their emails but none of them have 'subscribed'. I am not sure how they got there. If they actually meant to subscribe to my Newsletter or if it is just fake, spam addresses?. When I go to analytics I see that a 'create account' page has been clicked on - but the link for this page does not seem to be on my site.

I am not sure if they are real customers or not. If they are real then is it possible that my site is not working correctly and they meant to subscribe to my newsletter. Or possibly have started the checkout process but this is  not showing in my analytics.

I hope this makes sense! I would appreciate any feedback on this,

Thank you!

I have the same thing happening in my 'customers' section of my Shopify store email list. The only place I have online for a customer who visit my store to sign up is with a 'subscribe' field in the footer page with double confirm 'subscribe'. I can not understand how these names appear as 'not subscribed'. I did not place the names there. I have no orders......so? I've been deleting those 'not subscribed' names because of rules prohibiting sending  to 'not subscribed' people.

I have the exact same thing happening. As well as the "register" landing page in analytics. I have no idea how people are getting there since there is no link to that on my site. I didn't even know I had a page like that.

Hi, there! It's possible this is spam, but these could be real customers as well. There are ways a customer account can be created without a customer subscribing to receive marketing from your business. Customer accounts are created when any of the following actions are taken:

  • If a customer signed up for your mailing list or directly made a customer account
  • If a customer placed an order
  • If a customer started an order, but abandoned the checkout before completing the purchase
  • If the customer account is added to the store manually

If you are noticing a lot of new customer accounts and no orders, I'd recommend reviewing your abandoned checkouts to learn more about what could be happening. We can also look into this with you if you reach out to us through the Help Center. We can't see your account information here over the Shopify Community so we can't accurately speak about the specific customers you are seeing and your analytics results here. That being said, if you'd like us to review this with you, please reach out to our support team through the Help Center here and we'd be happy to help.
