Newbie Question - Trying it out

We have a custom built website (Drupal based). I wanted to see if it was possible for me to create a Shopify store and, when we are ready - two months or more-- maybe more, have the web people who created our website connect them. If yes, how can I start that process. We don't even have the products yet. I just want to work on a look.
