Percentage Off Discount Code for 1 Item Only

Our online boutique would like to offer 20% off the purchase of 1 full-priced product when a unique coupon code is entered.  Is there a way to do this in Shopify or is there a certain app that would do this?  We do NOT want the 20% to apply to all products - only the highest priced product in their cart.

I'm Miles from the Social Care team at Shopify. Thanks for reaching out about your need for a discount feature. At this stage, Shopify's built-in discount feature doesn't offer a way to discount the highest-priced item. You're only able to set conditions around which products or collections are part of the discount, and what the minimum requirements of that discount are. This is something I'm happy to pass onto our team for consideration in future updates on your behalf though.

In the meantime, I've had a look through the Shopify App Store to see if there are any apps that may help you achieve your goal. It looks like some apps offer similar functionality, but not quite. There are some apps that allow you to apply the discount to the lowest priced item in the cart as this is standard practice across the retail industry (i.e. buy 2 or more items and get x% of a product of equal or lesser value). I'd love to understand the thought process behind your current idea of discounting the higher-priced item.

Your best option here is to hire a developer to see if they can custom code a solution for you. I recommend Shopify Experts which is Shopify's marketplace of developers. Here, you'll be able to search and find a Shopify Expert who can help, or post a job request for experts to provide you with a quote for their services. Experts are vetted by Shopify so you'll always find someone who can help you out.

Hey @Miles - I'm looking for the same thing, however I am trying to discount the lowest item. Which apps did you find allow for this sort of discount?

Our store would also like this functionality. For certain discounts, like BOGO, it's customary to get the % off the lower priced item. 

However, for a % off any one item, it's rare to see the % off the lower-priced item. (Thinking specifically of Bed Bath & Beyond, Michaels, Joann Fabrics, Hobby Lobby, etc.)

If I limit the discount to the lowest-priced item, I disincentivize additional items being purchased in the same transaction.

I've heard that line numerous times from Shopify staff, that's it's not the industry standard to offer the % off the higher price, and it's simply not true.

I don't understand, this is such a basic feature. How do you not have this? Please implement this.  Other platforms have this feature easily

I was able to accomplish this with an app called automatic discounts & gifts. It took a bit of work and help from their help desk to make it work the way I expected it to. Also costs more. I agree Shopify needs to find a way to implement this.

C'mon already. This an obvious need for the platform. Get on it. Lord knows you skim enough money off of us to pay a developer to implement this basic feature.

We are looking to do the same thing. We should be able to create a promo code without the use of an app to get a percentage off on one item only.

Hi @Miles has this come along in being implimented yet? Our jewelry store would like to have a percentage off one item only for a special promotion but it looks like taking the percentage off only the highest cost item isn't an option. Can we expect to see that soon?

We run this discount regularly, using the app Automatic Discounts & Gifts. It's a little clunky, but it works.

I'm trying to do the same thing! Shopify, please let us set a MAXIMUM item use for discounts. I'm running an in-person shopping event and am raffling off coupons. I wanted to have a coupon for 50% off any single item. But there is no way to provide a discount for a single item of their choosing.

We are also in need of this functionality, and we would also want to option to apply it to the highest priced item, because we don't want to discourage customers from buying multiple items. I am really surprised that this isn't built into the Shopify functionality.

Please Shopify!! We need a way to allow customers to use a Code to get a percentage off of one item!

Agreed, I am shocked that in the three years we've been using Shopify they haven't come up with their own built-in solution for better discounting. I worked at REI for 5 years and they still offer 20% off a single full-priced item, so it's obviously not something new. Shopify, please make this a priority so we don't have to rely on clunky apps.
