Product customization: How and when to gather customization info from the customer?

Imagine that you have a PDF product that you customize with information that the customer supplies.


(1) Which is the best moment to collect that customer information — at "add to cart" or during checkout?

(2) How do you build the necessary customization fields into the add-to-cart or checkout process?

I would recommend adding this sort of customization directly to the product page and have the customization options added to the products as part of the add to cart button.

The easiest way to do this would be to use a product customization app such as Infinite Options.
