Product Option Text Field and Order Exports

Here is a scenario… I will mentioned what I need… and then give examples. We actually need 2 things… that are interconnected.

The product we are selling requires a date of birth… that’s not needed to age check someone… it’s just part of the “registration” info we need. It doesn't have to be a "date picker" - text input will do.

We need the customer to fill it out as part of the checkout process… before they submit the order. I was thinking about doing this as a product option… where in BigCommerce for example, you can natively (without having to use an app)… have a text input field/box as a product option, where someone can type in what they want… and that becomes part of the product as a product option and shows up on the receipt and order export. But I was told by Shopify that they don’t have a simple text input field product option without custom coding or using an app. An example of what I’m talking about is say you sold a sign… and can have custom text engraved on it… you would have the customer type in the option field what they want on the product page or as part of the cart/checkout process… and that product option is now part of the product… and appears in order exports and such… it doesn’t appear Shopify can do that without an app or customization.

The 2nd thing we need is to be able to export all of the orders everyday… in a CSV or excel file format… that includes all of the order info – product name, email address, person’s name, address, etc. AND the birthdate info above.

When I talked to Shopify… they implied that would also require custom coding… and that the 2 apps don’t work with each other… ie. the app to export the orders… and the app to put the custom field.

I just find it such a simple task that in Wordpress and BigCommerce it could easily be done… so – does anyone have any ideas… where we need the customer go give us their date of birth… it is a required “field” and they can’t checkout without it… and ALSO – at the end of each day… we can do a order export CSV or excel file… and it will include all of the orders that day to include the date of birth for each customer? I thought about using the “note” section on the checkout as a place people can put their date of birth… I assume we can change the text “note” to “Date of Birth”… but I was told by Shopify support that we can’t make the note section a required field for the customer to fill out before checking out… which is problematic as many people won’t notice the “note section” and will forget to leave their date of birth so making it a required field is necessary.

We did look at the apps... there are a ton of them... most aren't all that specific on what they can do as it pertains to our needs... and the filtering process for the apps isn't good on shopify - ie. to find what we exactly need. I could code this all day long in Wordpress and BigCommerce but I don't have the time to learn the Shopify API and codebase and it's mind boggling why this is such an issue with Shopify. It's literally one text field and making it part of the product... you mentioned custom fields... during checkout process... but how do we make that part of the order... that will export out in the CSV order export?

no link yet... it's in the middle of being designed... but that shouldn't matter... as it's a straight forward request... no need to check out the website at the moment. It's a simple task... I just don't work in Shopify in this way... if it was BigCommerce or Wordpress... I would have it handled by now. What is the cost you would charge for a task like this?

I can't give you access to the site so you can just code it on your sandbox site I assume you have... and then email me the code... as it's just code to put in the template... I work with code daily... can you do it like that? And I assume the payment after the work - right? I don't see a portfolio from you nor any ratings/reviews... and I think you are in a country foreign to my own.

Not sure what you are asking? Not sure what your comment, "sure" means. You can do this project without having to get access to the site right? You can code it on your end... and just tell me where to put it - right? And I pay for it after it works - correct? Don't just say "sure" - let me know you understand the terms. Thanks

You seem to have convoluted things a bit... or made it seem like there are 3 unrelated things when they are related. I don't have full confidence in your pitch that you grasp what I need... you kind of just parroted what I said. Curious... how much would you charge to have one required field as part of the checkout process and this field would show up for each customer as part of their order when we exported out the orders each day. I don't need the daily order report... to be automated... I just need it where it will show all of the orders each day... with the usual info - order time and day, name, address, etc. to include the date of birth. For someone used to Shopify... this should take about 30 minutes... in Wordpress, I could do it in 30m and in BigCommerce... about 15m... I just don't work in Shopify... which is why I'm posting here. It's not a hard task for someone that is familiar with Shopify. It's embarrassingly easy I'm thinking... I just don't have the time to learn Shopify in that much detail at the moment.

need to know my budget? Why does that matter... I need to know your price. It's a simple task... a 30m task at the most... I want to see if you are fair... I have 2 options... spend an hour or 2 and sort it out myself... or hire someone... just depends on the price.

Once this field is set up you can easily export your orders containing all your needed information using our App DataChamp.

so... your exporter can export orders with all of the order info... AND it can pick custom fields too? And put them all in the same format? Do you have docs or info on what fields and such it can pick up and use in the report/exporter?

do you understand the project? Keep in mind, I can't give access to the backend of the site... I would expect you to code it in on your sandbox testing site... and then send me the code and tell me where it goes and I can handle that... as I do code/develop myself... just not on the Shopify platform... but I can certainly sort out copying and pasting code once told where to put it. Also, since you don't really show a resume, website, reviews, etc. and which are typical to have those things in our industry... I would want to pay after the job is done.

I'm trying to accomplish the same thing. I've used a pre-order app that allowed me to collect information for an order but then found there was no way to export it to a spreadsheet, which was terrible as I had to go through and manually add the custom information to 400 orders on a spreadsheet.

Were you able to solve the issue using the custom meta fields and DataChamp? I'd love to hear if you were able to solve this. Thank you!
