Product Updated webhook not firing when metafield variant changed

I see this has been asked before: Webhook product/update not fired after variant's metafield is changed.

Is there anyway to get notified when a product's variant metafields have changed?

If not, how are we supposed to react (in near real time) of changes?

@edalzell From reading the post, it seems the GraphQL productVariantUpdate mutation does trigger when a variant metafield is changed. Have you tried that?

We're not using the API though, they change products directly in Shopify.
