Hi @Nick Sorry to hijack this thread. I'm not sure how to start a new and get your attention.

Hopefully you can someone help me out

I support a company with an ecommerce shop on Shopify; with the domain shop.betternaturefoods.co/ To get more insight via Google Analytics I'd like to set goals / funnels for him in Google Analytics. I know you have to add the steps (to the conversion goal) with /, such as:
/cart
/checkout/contact_information
/checkout/shipping
/checkout/payment

But, unfortunately, our URL's during the checkout are not so clean. In fact, you get these URL's while ordering at Better Nature now:

1. https://shop.betternaturefoods.co/ (good)
2. https://shop.betternaturefoods.co/cart (good)
3.https://shop.betternaturefoods.co/24953421875/checkouts/57d62fcff0b8bb6bf01eadd7425d189d?_ga=2.12635... (why is this? It's very messy, full of parameters trash)
4. https://shop.betternaturefoods.co/24953421875/checkouts/57d62fcff0b8bb6bf01eadd7425d189d?previous_st... (also full of parameters trash)
5.https://shop.betternaturefoods.co/24953421875/checkouts/57d62fcff0b8bb6bf01eadd7425d189d?previous_st...

6. https://shop.betternaturefoods.co/24953421875/checkouts/57d62fcff0b8bb6bf01eadd7425d189d?previous...

You see the URL's are not clean, not ideal to set up goals with but my guess is these parameters are related to specific customers, but how can we bypass this so we can see step by step goals?

What we'd like is

/cart
/checkouts
/checkouts/shipping

/checkouts/paymentmethod

/checkouts/paymentreview

/thank_you

How to achieve this?

Kind regards,

Emma

Hi @EmmaBetterNatur,

Nick here from Shopify. I moved your post and made it it's own thread to separate from the other thread which was different.

Just to make sure I'm on the same page as you, you are looking to shorten the URL links of the store to make them look neater? It looks like all the links you want to shorten are cart checkout links which cannot be shortened.

There are a couple of different ways to shorten URL's such as URL redirects . With this, only broken URLs should be redirected so I'm not 100% sure if that would work for you if the links aren't broken. The best way other than that would be via an app from the Shopify App Store. There is a good app for this with a free plan call URL Short Link Generator which you can see here

Is it just the cart checkout links you were looking to shorten or was it any others also?

All the best, Nick

Hi @Nick

It's not to tidy them up as such. We're not too bothered about that. What we want to do is understand why those long numbers are there - do they relate to the user/ order number and how can we bypass them for when we want to set up the goals in Google Analytics? As in GA you have to just put /cart, /checkout, /shipping etc

Hi @EmmaBetterNatur,

In this instance the numbers are unique identifies for the checkout, so it can register each cart checkout differently from one another. Because of that, each one needs to be unique.

With regards to setting up the goals in Google Analytics, there is a guide Shopify created going through all the steps for this which you can see read here

Hi Nick - I know this comment is a very late to your post.

However, I'm having the same issue with GA and these URLs when it comes to tracking checkouts and the thank you page.

GA does not link to these messier URLs with the number sequence in front - even when setting up the goal on GA as RegExpression this also seems to not work when tracking these pages.

Is this a compatibility issue between shopify & GA?

I can track my cart page no problem because my URL looks like this

https://emilyfleur.com/cart

But when I go to check out the URL is

https://emilyfleur.com/40723054755/checkouts/0d26fa3f0bb73d2dc978624e5f0ca5d3

/40723054755/checkouts/ this particular section being the problem when using it to set up a destination goal on GA

Do you have a solution for this/know what the problem may be?

Thanks

Niamh

Hi @niamhWR,

Sorry for the delay on the reply, I was away on vacation. Great question! The links you gave are slightly different and it would make sense to why they don't have the same URL.

The first link shows an empty cart:

09-39-97joi-5e5es

And the second link is a cart with a product in it which adds the extra /40723054755/checkouts/ part:

09-39-5698z-ndcmh

Something else to note is that the GA analytics and Shopify analytics can show slight discrepencies which you can read more about here. I hope that helps explain the difference for you!
