Recommendations at variant level

Recommendations at variant level

Hello,

I would like to configure different product recommendations for different variants of a product. There are some recommendations that are relevant to some variants of a main product and not to others.

I've attempted to use Shopify Search & Discovery, bulk edit recommendations, but all of the variant options in the grid are greyed out and it is only possible to attribute recommendations at the main product level.

Can someone please let me know if it is possible via an app or custom dev?

@CarlSwann,

To configure different product recommendations for different variants, Shopify's default functionality and the Search & Discovery app indeed only allow recommendations at the product level, not at the variant level. However, there are a couple of approaches you can take:

1. Custom Development:

  • Custom Code: A developer can create a custom script to handle product recommendations based on the selected variant. This could involve using Shopify's liquid code and JavaScript to detect the variant selected by the user and dynamically load the relevant recommendations.
  • Custom Sections: Developers can create custom sections that are variant-specific and load different recommendation blocks based on the chosen variant.

2. Apps:

  • Third-Party Apps: While the built-in Shopify app doesn't support variant-level recommendations, some third-party apps might. Look for apps that allow deeper customization or offer advanced product recommendation features. Some apps to explore include:
    • Personalized Recommendations by Wiser
    • Recomatic Related Products
    • Frequently Bought Together by Code Black Belt

Each of these apps has different levels of customization, so you'll need to explore their features to see if they can meet your needs.

3. Workaround:

  • Separate Products for Variants: If the variants differ significantly, another approach is to create them as separate products. This way, you can assign specific recommendations to each “variant” (now a separate product).

Next Steps:

  1. Evaluate Third-Party Apps: Test a few of the suggested apps to see if they offer the variant-specific recommendations you're looking for.
  2. Consult a Developer: If you need more tailored functionality, a Shopify developer can build a custom solution to suit your needs.

Thank you so much @shahrozbabar5

I really appreciate you taking the time to write such a detailed response. The custom development route does indeed sound like the most suitable.

Thanks again.

I wouldn‘t use an app for this, you will need a bit of custom code but this isn‘t too hard. I would have product variant switching setup first and you could then link the products, that would be the proper base for a project like this, and when you switch the variant you could use product metafields, or more specifically a products list metafield in which you could manually add whatever products you like. Then when you switch variants the respective recommended products would be shown.

What you are actually thinking of is linking variants as separate products and then you can add recommended products at product level
