I have had a few abandoned carts in the last month or so with a high dollar amount. The customer uses asdfasdf@asdf.com as their email with a random address and goes by John Doe. 

 

What are they looking for? Is there anyway to block them?

 

This is the information I could find via Shopify's analytics.

They are now on their third abandoned cart of the day. Two this morning, one late evening.

I too have gotten 3 abandoned carts with the same info as you. All 3 with very high dollar amounts. 

I came looking for an answer. Everything I've found so far has been it's spam.

 I also have an abandoned cart with this name and email address.  I looked at asdf.com and its super weird.    What would the purpose of this be?

Same for me, same email address. My shop is in French and most of my customers are in France, I don't sell in the USA.

Just throwing my name up here Shopify! I have eight abandoned carts all with the same amount. It's obviously a bot given the number of us that are complaining here. (And, there are probably many more who are not on this thread.)

I have high value abandoned carts from this exact email.  Asked sidekick how to block them, but they evidently don't have that ability built in.  😞

Same for me.  22 abandoned checkouts in 3 days.  Each had the exact same items in the cart for a total of $10,272.40.   Different shipping address.  They sure seem to have plenty of time on their hands.

I’ve received several of the same abandon carts from this same email with random addresses and high value amounts. Not taking it seriously unless a purchase goes through and id need to make sure it’s not a scammer.

I have also had a few of these - 3 today and 1 on the 27/12. All for a similar $500 amount and all with different postal addresses (which are all government buildings when I searched them.) My assumption is it is a scam as people may email them asking if they can help in any way? But I actually doubt the email address works, so I have absolutely no idea what they are doing. Super strange and a bit concerning!

Same here, he is trying since few days with same exact amount of $629.83. One of the common thing I noticed among all his try, he uses address that either shows Capital building of the city, he used Whitehouse as delivery address 😀, then State secretary office etc.

That was on 23 October 2023 - so clearly it didn't work as he is still sending emails. I've had 6 today - large carts. How can we stop him if th eHigh Court and Shopify couldn't?

Hi,

I see there are a lot of people complaining about this, but I don't see a response from Shopify.  Has Shopify provided a way to block this email address?  It looks like the email my be attempting to get authorization/testing stolen credit card numbers.  I have had several of these for almost a year.  They keep trying to purchase Gift cards, but I don't see where they entered any credit card numbers.  Since they aren't entering a credit card number, I don't know what they are attempting to accomplish.

Ditto for us. Five abandoned carts since Dec 26. John Doe asdfasdf@asdf.com Same items every time. Same amount. Different shipping addresses. All addresses are government buildings or foreign government agencies.

Same thing - many high-value abandoned carts, same fake email, bogus addresses. Not a huge deal, but a bit annoying because we have some automations and other processes around abandoned checkouts, so this is wasting a bit of my time.  At first we though this might be google, as in the past they've done things like this before, but these don't seem to have the same feel as those google ones, which all had phone numbers traceable to google.

I have 6 abandoned checkouts from this email, gradually increasing. $1300 in September, $1400 in December, $1500 x4 in the same day in January. I have tried to find rhyme or reason in the selections but it's a mix of brands. I have also wondered if it's related to ADA scams but the items all have their photos correctly labeled. I'd love to know what Shopify is doing with this many flags against the same account.

it’s annoying that nobody from Shopify is responding. 

anyway Rachel,  I have opened the app via Shopify called Frsud Judge.  Which is virtually free.

 

i then went in to it and set up a deny list.  Add the value such as email and name.  So the asdf email and name John Doe.  This should deny any further access.  

I did it last night and as of yet no further abandoned orders.  Only time will tell.

Strange for sure - we solved it by deleting the customer record, archiving their abandoned cart, and then created the attached screenshot of a Flow workflow to auto-delete any further attempts of that exact email.

Excellent tip TealTX!  . I added 2 workflows for both email addresses.  I noticed that they're using a VPN & had multiple abandoned checkouts totalling thousands on my site. Hopefully the flows will prevent more.

@TealTX Thanks for the flow layout. Rookie question though, what does the last step actually do? Is it more to have someone manually go into your marketing integration like Klaviyo or something and delete them from your lists?

Same exact thing with me. It started a few weeks ago and has since escalated to almost 20 bogus abandoned carts. Blocking a customer isn't an option without an app anymore, so I did the next best thing and deleted the customer. Fingers crossed that did the trick!

I have the same issue, 5 high value orders with multiple items in abandoned checkouts. Annoying and we need Shopify to take action - this is clearly a problem for multiple merchants.

same here all of mine were in the $4000 range.

I did have a different address in the backend when i looked at the customer profile. 

I created the flow suggested by someone here and hopefully it will work.

I suppressed and deleted customer in my Klaviyo email.  Then I went to Shopify > Customers, found that email and deleted customer account. Then I went into my Flow app (free) and created a flow in case this bot ever came back...

Also seeing the same issue. Looks like the dates of some of these posted are the same as ours.  I've installed Flow and followed the advice here, hopefully it helps - The latest one has a shortened email without a name (asdf@asdf.com) so maybe worth adding this to your flow.

Yeah we're experiencing the same thing, and the email is always a variation on asdf@asdf.com.  Another one just popped up today, and these were the previous instances. I can't think of a reason for it that isn't some kind of data collection or a genuinely malicious attempt to scam shop owners. 

 

 

At minimum, it's a nuisance and I'd appreciate action from Shopify.

Me too. Just now, this customer asdf@asdf.com abandoned a cart worth over 2K CAD, and I have several others with even higher amounts. Should we be concerned?
