All things Shopify and commerce
We just saw an update to the shopify admin page and now the search bars are missing from the Products AND Orders page. We currently cannot search for a product without using the gneeral search bar at the top which also searches through orders and other sections of the site. We have 60,000 items and thousands of orders. We cannot be sifting through this entire list every time someone wants to look at an item! Please advice or revert.
Thank you

Yikes, sorry, that was crappy to say I figured it out and not say where! All the way to the right side of where the search bar should be there's a magnifying glass button. This un-hides the search bar.
Ok, after a little more searching I found them. They are hidden by default. Why in the world would you hide the search bar on an item or order list. That is literally the most important feature!
Yeah, I absolutelee agree. Our end users rely heavily on the search and this just adds another step for them. Hopefully they at least add a way to permanently enable the search box's visibility.
Yeah, not sure who decided to implement that but it's the opposite of efficient.
They also got rid of the ability to search by "created last" or "updated last" feature which we have to use because we literally have tens of thousands of items. Thanks for nothing Shopify.
I believe you can still get those options by clicking the button with the up/down arrows to the right of the button that shows the search bar
This feature is not working for our store
I dont want to have to click that first before I use the search bar every time. *SO* annoying!
AAARRGGHH!!
Yet another example of Shopify making purely cosmetic changes - that have ZERO use to the average small business owner and often actually make our lives more difficult by ADDING clicks to the things we use daily. It frustrates the hell out of me.
I'm experiencing the same level of displeasure at them hiding the search bar that I use hundreds of times a day - can you tell me where it is please?
This is an accepted solution.

thanks @Absolutelee123 I figured it out immediately after posting.
But how frustrating! I just posted another suggestion for the @Shopify developers to consider.
But the problem still exist. After the search bar reappears then if you search for an order number it does not return anything. Also if you want to see previus orders from a customer I ahve yet to figure out how to get them. If I serch in top serch bar and customer profile comes up and i click on see all orders it does not show them. Shopify please go back to the version that worked well. This one sucks.
Hello,
I searched our orders by customer name and customer email address (which worked perfectly fine before), to no avail. The disappearance of the search bar that was there all along seems to have created this problem. Does anyone have a solution?
Maybe I'm going mad ... but it never used to be hidden right? Why is it hidden now by default?
How do I make it stay visible because it a pain in the ass to keep having to click on a tiny icon to then go to the search bar when I used to just click in there and ta-daa ... workflow uninterrupted.
I've logged this issue with Shopify support - let's see what they have to say!
Nope!
Nice, guess it hasn't propagated here yet as still have the hidden search bar. Glad it's getting sorted though.
They seem to have fixed the problem related to the inability to search using a customer's name or a customer's email address. However, the search bar is still hidden by default.
and give me a **bleep** break - the filter button is on the opposite side of the page from where I want to type..... seriously, who comes up with this shit
And if i'm going to search by date created, WTF would it default to the oldest item first??? The stupidity of this "development" beggars belief......
I can't wait for some other company to step up and wipe shopify off the planet. This kind of stuff is usability 101. It's almost as if they're trying to get people to stop using the product. The admin interface is a disaster.
I just wanted to check if this is still the only accepted solution and not a feature that could be toggled on or off by a store owner or admin? I also didn't see anyone else mention it (didn't read every comment) but you can to CTRL+F to populate the search bar instead of clicking the magnifying glass every time (still worse than it was).
THANK YOU. I completely missed that and thought I was losing it. Why the change - a PITA, honestly.
With all of the improvements by Shopify apparently intended to 'reduce friction' and help customers in our stores navigate and purchase with less clicks, why on earth would they remove the search box, so that as business owners we have to click on an icon to show the box? I hope this is reversed ASAP.
Yes, I totally agree, this is a ridiculous change that causes me to lose a few extra seconds every single time I go to search for a product, order, or customer, having to stop and realize oh I have to click the search icon to get the box to come up. Why, Shopify??? I hope they are listening and at least give us a setting so that we can leave it open all the time like it should be!
Any news on this? I still have to either click "F" or mouse over to the right and click the mouse button onto the Magnifying glass anytime I want to search products, orders, customers, etc to narrow down the focus.
on mobile it's no easier. It's still an extra click to get that as well. can't click "F" on mobile... 😞
please figure this out!
thanks
I don't see a magnifying glass. Having to click this 100 times a day makes me crazy
Hello,
It's not a magnifying glass, its the filter symbol - however, just type "f" (not capital F - does not work) and the search bar will appear and the cursor will be in it. Just another work around for a poorly thought out and executed "update" from shopify.
Well, maybe it's only desktop, but haha.
I wonder if they plan on bringing the bar back or if i just need to make an auto click for that element. Shouldn't be too hard; just need to target each page where I need it to occur until they fix it.
Atwood Rope, if you're able to do that, can you share? I'm not able to write code, and clearly neither are the Shopify developers?!?
Well, that's just it; isn't it?
Here's the deal. We can provide temporary solutions to fix minor things like this from time to time, yes. But the real solution needs to come from shopify because of how they generate their front end code. Like twitter, yahoo, facebook, etc. This makes it much more difficult to write anything on the front-end that doesn't run the risk of breaking or needing constant updates. That's why the real solution needs to come from them because the changes will be more permanent.
that said, they make terrible decisions that are more permanent all the time too haha!
here's the script we run on tampermonkey that opens the search bar for us. it works! 😄 You can probably adapt it to greasemonkey or other front-end browser javascript runners that you want.
Sincerely,
atwoodrope
That's really good of you thanks. I will ask my external coding helper if he can implement it for us, but I completely understand that it might not be a permanent solution.
I honestly don't think Shopify could care any less. They're embarrassing.
They already changed their code on my store generating new button keys. Had to change it to this:
I wish they'd change there stuff to permanent fix.
-Atwood Rope
Oh look, it changed, yet again but still doesn't work like it previously did. 😛
Looks like this now.
Please shopify, have the bar already be open, or return it to where I can just click on it. We use this all the time.
@AtwoodRope Do you mean it has changed recently? I can't see ANOTHER change from what is being discussed here.
I doubt many here can decipher the point you're trying to make with the code.
Yes, the html class identifiers that represent that button that you click to open that search bar keep changing because it's part of the automatic generated code that the front end generates when they make internal changes to their code.
I just want it to do this when I either refresh the page or click on a bar on the left that refreshes that content:
I'm still manually implementing this. Would be great if Shopify already included this as an option to automatically have the search bar selected whenever it is on the screen as an option. I can't number the times now that it is the very first thing I need to do on any of their pages that have that little search bar option.
-Atwood Rope
Just adding my name to this list of frustrated users. NOW we have to navigate a DIFFERENT way to search in our admin AGAIN.
It wasn't broke, why did you change it?
Do any of the backend shopify designers actually HAVE a shopify store that they run so they can see what we see?
Or are you just looking to change things to keep your staff busy?
These new changes just aggravate - they don't do anything for us except annoy us.
The search bar on the products page is by far my most used feature in the backend of my shop. Why the heck would they hide the thing?! I'm now fighting literal years of muscle memory for the stupidest change. Shopify seems determined to make so many useful features difficult or unusable.
Had the same problem this morning - My staff asking where the search bar has gone. When you refresh the page and the search bar is blank it defaults to off again - maybe there is a setting somewhere to make it permanent again.
Thanks for this thread. This is literally the stupidest change i've seen in the 6 years i've used shopify. CHANGE THIS BACK ASAP PLEASE
Can't believe they hide the most used feature....What's the point?
Agreed I HATE this change. Why should I have to codemonkey all these horrible decisions?"???? I USE THE SEARCH BAR every single time i go to the products!
I have 1000's of products i HAVE to use the search bar, now i have to do ONE extra click EVERY TIME. WHAT in the world is going on over at shopify development testing env where they all thought this was a good idea?? Look, good changes can be made; faster system, more features, but odd ui changes??
sorry, I enjoy using shopify and believe it to be a great product.
I honestly don't think the developers or designers at shopify ever do usability testing. Every redesign they implement requires more time, more steps, more clicks. Why aren't they prioritizing efficiency, ease of use or functionality?
An update from Shopify that is useless and caused more problems for customers. Please bring the search bar back to default. With tens of thousands of lines, how does removing the search bar help users to find what they want?
Please bring back the search bar.
When considering implementing changes, you'd hope the developers at @Shopify might think to themselves "Are these changes going to ADD CLICKS to the tasks the small business owner needs to complete?"
If the resulting answer is a YES - then IT'S NOT A USEFUL CHANGE.
Kindly revert it back to the way it was and get onto working out how to fulfill partial orders that are for pickup...
If the answer is YES to more clicks, pull-downs and saves - they do it
All the updates in the last year have been complete shit.
I have to agree with this post. The previous search bar setup was more efficient. Yet again Shopify has now added additional clicks to our process to a simple step. I placed an order with another supplier that also uses Shopify, he is also not impressed with this change. Our time is valuable and Shopify continues to use it up. Bring back the original setup for easy access and usability, the change makes no sense. Look how much time it has taken from all of us here to type out our complaints and opinions, not knowing if they will actually view this.
