Seperating customer notes from delivery labels

Hi all, looking for a bit of help here that I am struggling with. Is there a way to seperate our customers notes on the cart page from automatically going to the courier? They are auto printing on labels or messing up our couriers system as they have a very low character count (approx 50) and we don't want to limit our customers to such a low count on their notes.
