Each of our products have a unique serial number and we want the serial number to be linked with a customer order. Is there a way to create product serialization in Shopify?

Hey, you could put that Information on a comment? Is that for internal information or will be shared with customers? Is that a given number that you know by the time that the order is processed ?

Were you able to solve the serialization question? I would also like to be able to mass upload serial numbers from a .csv file and append to Notes section by sales order.

Needing to do the same thing. We will ship our products to the fulfillment company and when order come in: they ship. The fulfillment company can pick any product, not caring about the serial number printed on the box. But when they ship, we want them to record the serial number at the order level, by product. They could be shipping one product or 20 to the same customer. But every order must show what was the serial number they shipped. We also are hoping this will flow back to Quickbooks, as the orders get fulfilled. I'm reading about meta-fields and other options ... prefer not to buy a solution, but code the change ourselves.

how about using line item properties? You could have custom information saved for each product of an order or even an order itself. By doing that you could i.e. generate a random number on the product page and tranfer it all the way to the order and display that number in any place you need after the order has been placed by using line_item.properties.

I'm looking for the exact same solution. If you create 1000+ orders and want an automated system, then entering it into line item properties would be such a tedious exercise.

We actually found a workaround for this. Our warehouse is going to
automatically add the serial numbers to the order notes via the Shopify
API, then we can send this to Hubspot using the same field. Once in
Hubspot, we’ll create a workflow that automatically makes a copy of the
serial number/order note in a custom field. This means that if someone
overwrites the order note field in Shopify we still have a record of the
serial number associated with a particular customer.

Thanks for the tip. We are now directly working with dealers and are not using Shopify. Did support direct customer orders.

Long term we hope to make Shopify changes to allow only dealers to order. With a secured password protected site.

We created a script using SerialMagic Professional Windows to post serial numbers a tags.
We scan serial number with Scanfob brand scanner and SerialMagic posts the serial number as a tag

For large number of serial number, SerialMagic has 'Virtual Scanner' option to assign CSV file to supply input, so we put hundreds of serial numbers on the order.

This worked nicely until a recent Shopify 'improvement' that causes the script to run 2500% slower, and Shopify failed to provide any method to override the 'auto-save tag' feature.
