Shipping Profiles Dictated by Collections or Tags

Shipping Profiles Dictated by Collections or Tags

Is there any way to create a shipping profile that grabs items within a specific collection or that has a specific tag?

My store has 1,000’s of items that should be shipped via USPS first class shipping, which is typically $3-$4, while the remaining majority of the items on my store fit into our flat rate shipping for $9. Currently everything is being shipped at the flat rate of $9, which is 2-3x what it should be for those USPS eligible items.

Creating a profile and manually adding those 1000’s of items is a daunting task.

I’ve looked into two recommended Shopify apps and neither of them offer this capability.

Is there any other way to accomplish this?

Hey @JJOutdoors,

Check out Automate Shipping Profiles - we were built just for this 🙂

We just (as in maybe an hour ago) launched a tutorial video, so be sure to check it out!

Out of curiosity, what did you search for in the Shopify app store?

Warm regards,

Is there an option that doesn't have a monthly fee?  I believe this should be something that shopify should have built into their system. I did notice that if you search by the tag name in the shipping profile product search bar that products with that tag will show up. But, so will other products that have a matching word in their description. So, the option to choose products by tag only should be an easy addition for shopify. Collections would be nice also.

@Boxtherob there's not, no. The reason we built Automate Shipping Profiles was that our CTO was granted early access to view profiles in early 2019, and he noticed almost immediately that there was no option to bulk-assign products and that it had to be done one-by-one. There is a heavy server load to be constantly listening for product updates, which is likely why Shopify has opted not to include automation. This is also why we have to charge for the app - development, support, and our servers constantly listening for webhooks has a cost associated. Our margins are virtually non-existent on this app as we offer it as a quality of life improvement for users. We've saved over 5 years of time for our users since launch that otherwise would have been spent manually assigning products.

We have a time savings calculator on the product page if you are interested in seeing the value of the app.

You do have the option of uninstalling the app before the end of the billing cycle so it isn't a monthly charge but it still gets you a big chunk of time savings upfront. You can also manually assign them, it's just a matter of personal preference of how you would like to utilize your time.

It's not automatic but:

The search function searches across all product data fields. So if you add some very specific labels in a meta field or the tags, and then search by that text in quotation marks, you should be able to find those products. You will have to do this on a regular basis though, every time you add new products or want to update their shipping class.

Example:

  1. Add the tag (or use a metafield) "Shipping Profile: Local Pickup Only" to a product. I tested this with a tag, but I think a metafield should work just the same.
  2. Go to the shipping profile for local pick up only and search for the text you added to the tag. DO include quotation marks around it. Example: "Shipping Profile: Local Pickup Only"
  3. The search should now pull up all products that you have added that specific tag to, and only those products.
  4. Scroll down in the list until products stop loading. If you have hundreds or thousands of products that you've added this tag to, then you may have to scroll down multiple times.
  5. Check the check box to select all visible products. If you didn't scroll down all the way to the bottom it won't select the products that haven't been loaded yet.
  6. Add these products to the shipping profile.

In terms of removing products in bulk from a shipping profile though, I guess you could add a "Remove Shipping Profile: xxxxx" tag.
