Shopify Discounts - how to make it easier to exclude products

For Cyber Monday, we're trying to offer a storewide discount with the exception of our sale "compare-at" products. We have a very large inventory, so selecting by product is not an option and the ratio of sale products is very small compared to the inventory size. And when we try to deselect a sale collection from the options, it still doesn't prevent double stacking discounts on these items as these products fit into multiple collections.

It seems to me that Shopify could easily make this easier for shop owners by 1) allowing an option to exempt "Sale" items on the Discounts setup page and 2) instead of only providing the option to include collections/products, allow the option to exclude collections/products. 

In the meantime, we have not been able to find an alternate option to prevent discount stacking on top of sale items. I welcome anyone's ideas, but ultimately I wanted this information to be elevated to the Shopify dev team.

You could create an automated collection with the condition of Compare-at price is greater than 0 which would add any products to this collection when you use the compare at field and remove them when you remove the field and you can then use this collection to exclude it from the discounts you don't want it to apply to.

Hi there, I already took this step, which is why I addressed it in my original post. I have created an automated collection for on-sale items, but many of these products belong in other collections. For instance, we're already running a Garmin watch sale, and thus the Garmin is under this auto-collection. But because Garmin also falls under an "Accessory" collection, the discount set up in Shopify does not exempt it. Essentially, what I'm getting it is that the Discount setup in Shopify does not complement larger inventories and product selections.

What about creating a discounts collection and just add the products you want to be included in the discount either via tag or another property then just use that collection as the discount so product could belong to accessory for example but only discount if they belong to the discount collection you create, you could also use some conditions to automate this collection as well but setting a condition about the compare at price and other conditions you want to use to create it.

Maybe auto-tag all of the sale items based on price not equal to compare at price and then exclude that tag from the discount?
