Shopify Spam Customer Accounts with Real Email Addresses

Solved

Hi, I have a Shopify website and in the past week or so, I've been inundated with over 100 fake customer accounts that have gibberish names with no locations, but attached to real people's email addresses. I've even received an email from a person saying, "I never signed up for email marketing from you, please remove me from this list." So now my site looks like I'm the one who's spamming people. When in reality, it's a bot with people's real email addresses, creating fake accounts without their knowledge and the Shopify site is sending them email marketing confirmation emails.

This has been going on for a week now. I am wondering what I can do to stop this. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have contacted them several times and they keep on saying that they have fixed the newsletter.

I ask them to protect the "Create an Account" form which is the form I am having the fake accounts being made and they again say they have fixed the newsletter form.

It seems that BOTH Shopify and Shop protect are not listening!!

We’re still experiencing the same problem, receiving a couple of fake accounts with (seemingly) valid mail addresses per day via the “create an account” form.

Not happy at all…

I will add myself to this list. Too many to mention of fake accounts being created, with real email addresses and bogus names. I am inundated with replies from the Shopify 'Thanks for creating an account' email (which i believe cannot be disabled). Just ridiculous. Genuine people out there now think WE are the ones spamming them. This is very damaging. I had one email title HACKER. To read this alone is very worrying. SHOPIFY SORT THIS OUT. I have been a Shopify customer for 5 years with multiple sites and never have i experienced anything like this to such a level. Something is wrong and needs fixing. In the short term at least disable the account email so customers don't think its us who is spamming, give us the time to delete the fake accounts.

Does anyone know if Shopify have put a statement out or anything on social media like Twitter?

If Shopify cared at all about their customer base then they would have fixed this problem overnight. If an app like Shop Protector can sort out the fake account problem (blog comments not included) then why can't Shopify do it?

At the very least they could disable the account notification email functionality as many, many people have suggested in this forum.

Or even better, maybe offer to reimburse the $4.99 monthly subscription fee cutomers such as myself who downloaded Shop Protector now have to pay to solve this issue just to protect my brand and avoid being labelled a spammer.

Shopify know about this  problem, yet apparently choose to do nothing about it - shameful!

Yeah, the sign ups are coming from 'hidden form/s' within Shopify. Someone else said the same. I discovered this after removing (via theme support) the CREATE ACCOUNT page from my store and hid the newsletter sign up from my homepage, that bots were still signing up. I then asked theme support to reinstall the page and add extra fields in my CREATE ACCOUNT page with "EMAIL, FIRST NAME, LAST NAME, PASSWORD & finally CONFORM PASSWORD and the fields also had a REQUIRED/* with "Please fill out this field" that shows when you hover over each field. STILL NO LUCK....my next move it to add a reCaptcha checkbox directly above the CREATE/CANCEL button instead of having the reCaptcha on a new page. I hope this works. I think if the problem is internal then other apps will only be a "bandage" fix it and the problem will continue!!! Someone else mentioned SHOP PROTECTOR were able to identify the 'hidden form' and the bots have stopped. I'll use SHOP PROTECTOR if my final step doesn't work. Meanwhile, I sent a long email to Shopify Support and attached this community topic discussion. Hope they respond and or add to the MANY complaints 🙂 and help everyone out!! Hope this is helpful.

Shop Protector worked for me after their support made a tweak or two. But still - should be part of the core product.

I asked on twitter - @shopifysupport - will post back if I get a reply.

Support says they're aware and working on a fix, but it could take a long time.

Support has advised that the more shops they know are affected, the more resources they can apply to the fix. So I urge everyone to contact them. @shopifysupport on Twitter worked well - you can DM your shop name to them.

I did this on twitter earlier too! No solution but vented my frustration!

Surely EVERY Shopify shop is potentially affected?

It's just a case of whether shopify customers have noticed & bothered to do anything about it.

This just started happening to me as well. About 20 spam accounts created in the last day. I know there is a huge thread here with folks having the same issue, but figured I should add my shop to the list.

This is so tiresome! I just emailed support adding my voice asking them to escalate finding a solution.

Sooooo AGREE!! I've HAD ENOUGH!!! I've been doing a lot of research and getting close to making a move elsewhere.... I believe Shopify need to FIX the internal problems with the "hidden sign up forms" that allows bots/spam to have access to our stores. I think the bot/spam apps etc are perfectly fine but if the problem is internal then the bots will always win. Shopify is seriously wasting our time and I don't have time to continue to wait for them to fix their mess :(. *NOTE= if you are new to this convo please go back and read my post regards the "hidden sign up forms"....hope it's helpful.

No, not new to the thread. I first chimed in on 11/7 and have been following along. Your post on hidden forms was quite interesting. I, too, am exploring my options. I have a separate wordpress blog and may add woocommerce there and jump ship next year.  Such a shame. I've got 7+ years invested here and have helped other small merchants set up with Shopify. Some of them are having the same issue now too, and are asking me what to do. I have no answers.

Ok. No worries. WOW!! 7 years!!! I've been here only two years. It's sad. They are NOT helping us at all. I'm looking in to moving to BigCommerce in the new year too :-)...early Jan when my shop takes a break. Good luck with yours and all the other wonderful store owners you are helping.

My site used to be based on Woo Commerce and I would not recommend it to my worst enemy's cat. You want to talk about reliance on apps? It's 10 times worse than Shopify. Apps would stop working, and when Wordpress upgrades, you have to make sure that your site stays up to date or they won't guarantee security. No thanks.

OMGoodness :(. Not good at all. I've heard and read some really good things about BigCommerce. I like a lot of their security aspect in running an online store. They are one of my options for my big move in the new year.

I spent the entire month of December last year switching over to BigCommerce.  Their insite blog is HORRIBLE I venture to say the worst I've ever seen.  And they have no internal search capability on the admin side, meaning if you have thousands of products and are trying to search for keywords on the Admin side those keywords better be in the title because that's all their system searches, doesn't search descriptions at all.  Also their code is very advanced and hard to make basic changes without having to hire an expert.  Those were all big negatives for me so I ended up cancelling and staying here.  Their customer service is top notch though.

wow so we are not the only ones!!!

Shopify will not let us view our account without updating our payment info. We have told the rep that we will not pay another month of service until they give our organization time to reassess and figure out what and why all these issues keep happening as well as figuring out why Oberlo cant seem to explain to us how it is that their services work from an accounting perspective.

So now we are stuck. We want to first review out financials, but we do not feel comfortable giving Shopify our info as of right now. But now we are being denied reviewing out transactions unless we pay for another month?

NO WAY!

Best Regards,

WOW!! Thanks for the heaps up. They are one of my options...still researching and even talking to some private website developers.
