That looks/sounds normal to me. 

Most premium themes have an option within the theme settings (right under where you originally uploaded the image) to upload a separate image for mobile view. 

Best practice is to use a landscape image for desktop and then a portrait image for mobile. 

Otherwise, yes, it will look smaller on mobile, if you use the same image for both (or if your theme doesn't have the option to upload a separate mobile image).
