All things Shopify and commerce
Hello,
Is there a way to Split orders automatically based on products
We are bringing one product which will be sent directly from the supplier and all other products will be sent from our current warehouse.
I want to know what's the best way we can go ahead. Some options are:
1) Orders automatically get split if that product is there? Maybe a new order can be created for the separate product
2) Maybe - two tracking links get generated and get attached to the same order?
3) as soon as a customer wants to place the order - two orders get created automatically
How can we do this - please let me know?
Hi, @RJTSP.
That is a great question! Thank you for posting. I understand you're looking to split your orders due to different fulfillment methods. However, this isn't needed due to the way fulfillment works in Shopify.
For example, when set up correctly, if a customer orders one product that is shipped via location A, and one product that is shipped via location B, the single order will split the different fulfillment methods within the order. Let me explain how to set this up!
Please note, the steps for this process can depend on your supplier's fulfillment as well, so I will be providing the general set up. If you can provide me more information on how you plan on sending orders to your supplier I can provide the specific instructions for your needs.
First, you will want to set up Custom Fulfillment:
The custom fulfillment you just created will then populate as a location under Settings > Locations. Here you will also need to create your warehouse location.
Lastly, you will then stock each product at their respective locations. This will allow you to achieve the option of providing two separate tracking numbers, and fulfill the two locations separately, all within the same order.
In the meantime, I would love to hear more about your business to see how else I can help. What are you selling? Are you brand new to Shopify and e-commerce?
Skye, let's say I need to split orders, but not because the fulfilment, but because the way my accounting works - products that belongs to diff teams that want to manage their orders independently (from accounting/reports to usual operations like refund).
Is there a way to achieve that without using a 3rd-party app?
Hi, @alyssonfranklin
Thanks for joining the conversation. That's a great question!
While the custom fulfillment option was built for fulfillment purposes, you can utilize it for your needs as well! While there is no way to split orders without an app in Shopify, setting up custom fulfillment for your products will send an email to your teams that manage the different products for their record keeping.
Hi Skye,
Thanks for this, very clear.
I have the same need, but I need to ship my orders from 25 different locations.
In my understanding all affordable plans allow 10 locations maximum 😞
Do you have any recommendation for me ?
Thanks !
Sébastien
Hi, @SebLFB!
Thanks for reaching out. The maximum number of locations that you can have depends on your plan. Locations that you deactivate don't count toward your location limit. Apps that stock inventory or fulfill orders for you are considered to be locations, but don't count towards those limits. When you add such an app to your store, the app is automatically added as a location.
Unless you move to the Plus plan, you will be limited to 10 locations.
Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi @Skye
I want this same feature but based on supplier or location or may be category or may be products.
How can do this without using third party app and can i able to split the order before it triggers the webhook ?
Hi @RJTSP,
The SplitOrder app on the App Store does this nicely. Splits customer orders based on certain product criteria.
In your case, you could setup an automatic rule in the SplitOrder app, that if a certain product is bought, it will split this into a separate order so it can be fulfilled from a different warehouse/location. All other items in the order would still be fulfilled form your normal warehouse.
Looks like Shopify can't do this natively.
