Tags putting products in wrong Collection

I am using Auto Collections and I have a number of products with similar tags. I am finding too many products ending up in the wrong collection as a result. For example Ear Wires are ending up in my Wire Collection. But I don't want to remove ear wire from the tags in that group of products because that is what most people call them. Do I need to change my collections to manual? That would be a lot of work since I have over 2,000 listings. Or is there another way to make sure products with similar tags don't end up in the wrong collection. Thanks for any help!
