All things Shopify and commerce
I was reading about the policy of shopify and how if you are under 18 you have to use a guardians ssn and payment to pay for the account and run the account. The thing is I already started paying for with my own card but the account is under my parents ssn. Will I have to make a whole brand new account to receive payouts since I already started paying with my card or will it be okay if i just changed my payment method to my guardians? Also what is every requirement to receive payouts as a minor and what do I have to do? Thanks !
Hi, @lzsted.
Welcome to the Shopify Community, and thanks for sharing your questions.
I understand that your parents are the Account Owner(s) for the Shopify account that was created. However, you're inquiring about the payment method on file being changed to your guardians. If there is an active Shopify Payments account on file, then our authenticated team will need to update the details on the Shopify Payments account to someone who is over 18.
In order to do so, you can create a support request directly from the Shopify Help Center to connect with a Support Advisor to assist you from there. If you have questions accessing the Help Center, please include them here.

What if I had already changed the payment to my guardians card. Will I still have to contact shopify to change it for me ?
Hi, @lzsted
My name is Skye and I will be helping my teammate today.
To use a Shopify account under the age of 18, the entire account needs to be under your guardians information. This is not just the payment method, but also the tax information and account ownership.
There are situations where the account is reviewed and account verification is needed through specific documentation. This would all need to be your guardians information.
I hope that makes sense! If you have any additional information please let me know.
So would my guardian need to make an account and I would transfer ownership? Also how would my account be verified in order for my money to not be held once I do launch. Thanks !
Hi, again
If your account is brand new you can essentially adjust all Account Ownership and Shopify Payments information to your guardians. Or, you can make a brand new Shopify account with their information.
That being said, there is no way to prevent a hold from occurring. These are standard holds that all businesses are subject to. If you provide all the necessary information when it is requested the hold is only a few days.
Thank you for your quick reply !
So I just need to transfer ownership in order for me to be able to sell things since my guardian would own it. So would my guardian assign me as a staff member ?
Also last question. Would I be able to put my own bank account instead of my guardians and receive the payout in and get payed through there since I am under 18 ? Thanks !
Hi there, @lzsted! Thanks for following up with us! You're correct - you will want to transfer ownership when you can to your guardians, and then they can add you as a staff member to the store. As for your bank account, it would be best that all accounts connected to this Shopify Account be ones connected to the account owner, so your guardians. I
f you have already set up your Shopify Payments account for your business, then we'll want you to get in touch with our Authenticated Team via our Help Center so they can assist you with getting the data and information on your Shopify Payments account updated to your guardian's information as well. I definitely recommend doing this when you can! Once you use that link, let our AI Assistant know that you would like to update the data on your Shopify Payments Account to your guardian's information as you're under 18, and they'll be able to assist you from there!
