Hi Shopify Community,
We have a medium sized business, selling physical goods, mostly in a old school send a invoice and receive a check manner.
A couple of years ago we setup a small Shopify site selling replacement parts for our products, and are overall happy with the platform thus far.
Over the last 5 or so years, in our tradition business, we have been receiving/accepting payment via credit card in a increasing rate. Our average transaction is around $10,000. To accept these payments, our bank has a portal but it feels like it is from 1998. It is available at payments.ourwebsite.com (which is ideal) and when clients inquire about paying via credit card, we direct them to that location online.
Customers enter their contact details, invoice number, and payment amount, and then credit card info, and submit. Not exciting, but it works. We then manually enter the payment in our accounting system and we are good to go.
We would like to keep this basic flow but have the ability to style the page in a modern way, that is mobile friendly. Also, rates that Shopify Advanced offers, (300 per month, 2.4% and a minimal transaction fee) are quite attractive.
We are a established business, with a long credit history.
Our priorities are finding a good balance of a modern payment user experience (but still free form, ie not directly connected with our accounting system) and a low rate.
If anyone has any recommendations for how to execute a payment flow like this or plugins that would make free form invoice payment possible, would appreciate any thoughts.
Thanks!
Greg
Hi Greg,
Thanks for sharing your setup—it sounds like your business has a strong foundation and is thoughtfully transitioning into modernizing its payment workflows.
Given your current process and goals, you might find Shopify invoice payment a great fit for your Shopify store.
Free-form invoice payments: Just like your current method, INV allows customers to input payment details and submit an order without requiring immediate payment.
Send custom invoices: You can manually send invoices to clients once an order is placed or at any point in your sales process—ideal for your average $10K transactions.
Mobile-friendly & modern design: It presents a sleek, responsive payment experience that your customers will find much more professional than an old bank portal.
Offline payment simulation: The app lets you “hold” orders while awaiting payment—similar to your existing flow—without needing it to tie directly into your accounting platform.
Perfect for B2B and larger transactions: You can restrict this payment method to specific users, products, or cart conditions, ensuring it’s only offered where needed.
This tool offers the best of both worlds—Shopify's modern UX and flexibility, without overhauling your trusted accounting process.
Let me know if you’d like help configuring it or have more questions. Sounds like you’re on the right track!
All the best,
