All things Shopify and commerce
Hi there-
We are a "made to order" company and are transitioning to have stock/inventory on hand. We are trying out Shopify inventory management and we use the Venue Theme. When we track quantity and select "continue selling when out of stock" our product page shows "only 0 left" or "only -1 left". (See images for examples). It would be pretty confusing for a customer to see negative inventory and probably deter them from buying.
We want to change that text to something simpler like:
"In stock, ships within a week" for products/variants that are in stock.
"Made to order, typical lead times apply" for products/variants with zero or negative available numbers in Shopify inventory tracking.
I believe I need to change some coding in the Venue theme? Or is there an easy way to change the way inventory is displayed for customers?
And, I assume the text would update as the inventory numbers update in Shopify? IE, if inventory is 10 it displays "In stock, ships..." and if inventory then dips to 0, the text would automatically change to "Made to order, typical..." Correct?

This an easy fix and doesn't require coding!
In your theme editor, click the three dots next to the green LIVE indicator in the top left.
In the dropdown, select "Edit Defualt Theme Content".
This will bring you to a page that looks like the picture below.
Each theme has different options, but if you search up "Out of Stock", your out of stock notification should come up. If it doesn't, you will have to scroll through each tab, or try different search queries. Once you find it, you can edit the default messaging for out of stock items.

Hope this helps and I explained it well!

Found it! Thanks! For me it was under Products -> "Qty notice html".
Do you know if I can make this text customized and different for different variants?
For example, we have the same product in black and gray. Customer would select their color option from the same product page. For black could it say "in stock...." and for gray "made to order"?
Ended up using @boduffy solution. Very helpful!
Will use it for a while, but am getting some help for some custom coding to have the ability to display:
"In stock, ships in 3 business days" for stock > 1
"Made to order, lead time about 2 weeks" for stock < 0
