All things Shopify and commerce
Hello everyone, complying with these new EU VAT regulations has been challenging for us as a small/medium business. We are currently looking at ship24.com and avalara.com as possible solutions to this whole EU export situation going on now. They both seem to be set up similarly.
I would love to hear what you are using and what your experience has been with this.
hi @RCG - my response might be too late, but I wanted to have a solution implemented by 1st July - and there actually weren't many providers ready to offer a service by that point! I am using Simply VAT who did my EU registration for me and are doing my monthly returns for me. The monthly VAT calculations and remitting to the tax authority (which they also do on my behalf) is running very smoothly. And although I don't have any other reference for comparison, I have found their service to be excellent. Prior to July when there was so much uncertainty, they were offering a lot of detailed information and were very responsive to queries. It's the actual logistics of getting EU customer's orders in their hands from the UK which is proving to be stressful. Whilst most parcels are arriving safely without issue, I have encountered a few issues, namely with customs authorities in certain EU countries not knowing how to process IOSS parcels (this has resulted in customers being charged twice for tax, or their parcels being refused at customs despite having all the correct paperwork). This is ridiculous given the pressure we were under to be ready for 1st July! So the system set up to collect and remit tax is running great, but the operational logistics to deliver parcels to customers is not! Prior to IOSS introduction I was sending any EU orders I received to customers on a DAP basis which worked fine - my customers were aware of the need to pay tax and handling at their end so all was good. I'm wondering if it would have been better to just keep sending on that basis. But as we were told that IOSS parcels would be prioritised over DAP parcels I went with the more expensive route! Hope you find a solution that works for you, and let's hope things get better in the next couple of months because this BS is really hard to tolerate in what's already been a difficult year! 🙂
Hi RCG,
I are currently looking for a company to register for an IOSS number and have our VAT paid and declared in the EU.
Could you please let me know which provider you opted for, between ship24.com and avalara.com, and why?
Thank you!
