What thermal printer brand and model do you use for Canada Post?

What Brand and Model do you use for CANADA POST thermal printing?

Been using a laser printer the the last year but want to have a thermal printer. I have 1 for my UPS that they gave me 10 years ago but only seems to work for UPS.

That’s a great question. Do you know the make and model of the label printer you have from UPS? It may or may not be compatible, but I can definitely check in with our Retail team for you and see if it can be used with Shopify Shipping. 

If you’re wanting to purchase a new thermal label printer, I recommend using the DYMO LabelWriter 4XL thermal label printer, available for purchase directly from our Canadian Shopify Hardware Store here. I'm looking to purchase a Zebra Eltron Lp2844 as it works with the free 4x6 thermal labels I get from UPS. I'm wondering if it will work just fine with shopify, as it prints the correct size labels and printing from a regular printer doesn't require it be "supported by shopify" so I am thinking any thermal printer will work as long as it prints the right size labels. Am I correct in thinking this way?
I see that the dymo 4xl is a supported printer but I'm not sure if it works with the labels I get from UPS for free. Thank you for your help

Hi, @MissyLee5!

The only label printers that Shopify supports would be the Dymo LabelWriter 4XL, Rollo label printer, Brother QL-111ONWB label printer, and a standard desktop printer. It still may be possible to connect this Zebra label printer, however, but any issues would need to be handled by Zebra, rather than Shopify Support. More information on supported shipping label printers can be found here. Is there a reason why you’re leaning towards the Zebra printer, rather than the DYMO? 

As for using UPS labels with the DYMO 4XL label printer, I can’t confirm with certainty that those labels would be compatible. I do know that DYMO’s own labels are a bit different than others, as they have little notches on the label roll that indicate to the printer where to cut off the print job. It also may be worth reaching out to DYMO support directly, as using other labels may void your warranty.

My recommendation is to stick with the compatible DYMO 4XL printer, as this can be purchased directly through Shopify and we can offer full support if any issues arise. Once you have that printer, you can always print a test label to see if your UPS labels will work. The DYMO printer also comes with a free roll of labels to get you started, so if you find that the UPS labels aren’t compatible, you’ll already have a roll of the DYMO labels handy.

Thank you for your email, that was very helpful. As long as I'm able to
actually print with it I won't need support as I'm pretty technically
inclined and able to handle most everything myself. I'm looking to the
zebra because it's the most highly recommended for all platforms and is a
workhorse that seems to last everyone over a decade, and a big plus is I
get free shipping labels to ship with UPS and dymo requires expensive name
brand labels to work. Thanks again for the information.

TYLERCARRIERE : Ideally, Zebra printers should be able to print a 4 x 6 file. So if you are able to print UPS labels with it, you should be able to print Canada Post as well. However, if your shipping solution is generating a PNG file, then you need to use a script to convert this into a ZPL and print it. However, if you are using Multi carrier shipping label app to print PDF labels which can be auto printed in your thermal printer using Mobi Print Utility for android and iOS.
