Why is my site so slow?

I have recently redesigned my Shopify site and checked the page speed using Google's PageSpeed Insights. I scored an 88/100 on mobile but only a 48/100 on desktop. This is up from 46 after I have compressed my images using Minifier and removed any apps that I wasn't using. I have looked at other suggestions at how to speed up my site but I don't really understand how to implement any of them and don't want to mess something up. I'm sure my load times weren't this slow before the redesign. I may have a couple more pictures than before on my homepage but that's about all I can think of that would slow things down.

Can you give me some thoughts on what I could do to speed up my load times? 48 seems far too low and I worry that it may hurt my Google rankings. I would appreciate instructions on how I can implement your suggestions as well. Thank you!

Hello

I'm Jason, a guru here at Shopify!

So Shopify out of the box is optimized for the best speeds possible, but anytime you add an app or change some custom coding you can run the risk of slower site speeds.

With how fast connections are these days in most area’s nobody will notice this because it will often be milliseconds of a difference. Having products images set to 1024x1024px instead of 2048x2048px can sometimes be a big one, but again I know myself I run on a connect around 360mb/s so things load as quickly as the computer can spit them out!

I was doing some looking around and came across this blog post here about how to make your shop speeds quicker & I think it’s well worth the read. Image sizes are one of the biggest things that will slow down your site speed so trying the program the gent uses in this blog might be worth a shot.

The page speed insight that Google provides is great for webmasters who are already experiencing slow load times on their websites. If your website does not have any issues with loading, then the page speed insight won’t be able to improve your page load times in significant ways. In short, I wouldn’t worry about anything that the report says.

From what I see, your website loads very well on mobile devices and any changes made based on the Google page speed insight will result in negligible improvements that won’t be noticed by users.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you out with!

Slow loading speed can be related to a lot of things. It can be because of many apps installed on store, huge images you uploaded, or too much content on the site. First try to clean up your store from any unnecessary things, and if that doesn't help, you can always try to use app like https://apps.shopify.com/preloader it helps retain customers on your store, by displaying some eye-candy animation when everything loads in the back. You can adjust multiple options there. Plus, it makes your site feels better

Hey Von!

I used to work at some big e-commerce brands and we came up with a lot of little tricks to increase page loading time or "perceived speed".

A lot of it has to do with lazy loading images, since images are usually the heaviest items on a web page in terms of memory.

I built a monthly report tool (shopspeed.io ) that checks and gives you recommendations! Check it out if you have more questions.

hey, Von

My website: https://ayeneye.com/ is super slow...too load. but once it loads then it is lightning fast!

I've tried all sorts of things like: page speed optimizer. Is this the slowness of shopify hosting?

Or something else? Please help because I am losing customers and visitors!

It takes over a minute to load!

Thanks,

Hey Isaac,

As you noted your page speed is very good. I also checked your server speed and it seems also very quick https://www.bitcatcha.com/report/f11b8e747a8841ed980e1aef026689d8/

I'd be curious what your previous developer did to optimize the speed. The difference seems to be between a render by a normal browser, vs. the lighthouse headless browser. All the network requests are being handled quickly as well.
