All things Shopify and commerce
Hey there,
I've looked over my discount rules and read topics here in the forum and still don't know why what I set up isn't working... Here are screenshots of the setup.
Would truly appreciate a solution asap as Holidays are upon us... 🙂

Have you tried changing The required number of items to one? Maybe with two collections you should have a product of one from each collection?

Hey, @rachelflam! Welcome to Shopify Community!
I had a look at your buy X get Y discount code configuration and I can see you've set it up correctly. The reason why the discount code didn't work when you tested it is that the discounted items customers are supposed to get weren't added to the cart along with the products they buy. Discounted or free items aren't added automatically so in order for a buy X get Y code to function, customers need to manually add all the applicable items to their cart and the cart will update to reflect the discounted amount, just like what's illustrated in the screenshot below.
Sales and promos tend to be effective during the holiday season as plenty of customers have the intent to purchase and shop around for gifts. While they can bring in sales, you'll still find that some discount strategies don't work as well as expected. After you run your promo, don't forget to look at discount reports to see how it performed. Pay attention to the number of orders and the total sales the discount was applied to in order to determine whether the discount resulted in a profit or a loss. You can refer to the Sales by Discount report if you're on the Shopify plan or higher, but if you're on lower plans, you can use an app to pull up a discount report. You can look at the following apps:

Thank you so much Summer! I think I understand now. So for a regular BOGO I just need to put quantity one and what they need to buy and quantity one in what they get and that should work from what I understand. I'll try that and hopefully that will work! Thank you so much!
My pleasure, @rachelflam! That's right. You can also set your discount for customers to get 1 discounted item from a specific collection when they buy 1 item from a specific collection. As long as they add both items to the cart, the discount will work 😊

hey, so my buy one get one offer is not working, it doesn't add the free item to the cart automatically, help would be nice

Hey, @Ahmed70! Welcome to Shopify Community!
I understand you have a concern regarding the buy X get Y discount. Please note that the customers need to add the free or discounted product to the cart in order for the discount to work. It isn't added to the cart automatically, so what you're seeing is expected behavior. This is clarified in our guide on creating a buy X get Y discount.
If you wish for the free or discounted product to be added to the cart automatically, you'll need to set up the discount through an app. Here's a selection of apps you can check out for this function:
If you have questions about the apps, feel free to contact the app developer for assistance.
I'm excited to hear you're utilizing the discount feature. Offering discounts is an effective method for encouraging customers to check out your store and place orders so it's a good call that you've implemented a buy X get Y discount. Make sure you plan promotions throughout the year, especially during seasons when all stores hold sales. Certain holidays, such as Christmas and Valentine's Day, drive customers to shop so you don't want to miss out on the surge in shopping activity. Here's a list of retail holidays we suggest you offer discounts: Retail Holiday Calendar Every Date You Need to Know.
If you have any other questions about discounts, please don't hesitate to reply here. I'll be happy to help you further!

Hi Summer. i have the same issue, but with all relevant products in the cart. Can you help me?
Hi Summer. I am trying to set up buy 10 get 2 free, off a large number of collections. I've done this before and its worked find but today, its not working! Any tips? Thank you
Hi Summer,
I'm having a similar problem. We are creating a promotion that involves finding a product (Easter Egg), adding to cart, and once added it will reduce your overall basket by a % discount.
The problem is, we want the egg to be priced at £0. We can get the above to work, when the egg is given a value of £0.01+.
Is there a work around that you can suggest to make this Easter Egg hunt extra special?
We also tried adding an additional discount rule that the basket value is reduced by £0.01 when this product is added to the cart, but the Shopify system seemingly only applies one discount rule to each cart and not combined. Therefore, if a customer adds the Egg (£0.01), and then adds their product which then shows as a discounted rate, the price still shows E.G. £35.01 (With the cost of the egg).
Can you shed any light?
Thanks,
Jordan
Hi, @JordanPlayFaire. Thank you for sharing all of that context!
For more help with this I recommend reaching out to our support team through the Help Center here so we can test this with you in real time. That being said, after testing this out myself I do have a suggestion that may work for you. Instead of setting up the discount as an automatic discount, I was thinking it may be beneficial to use an "Amount off order" discount code in this case. You could still set up the Easter Egg hunt the way you'd like, but instead of having the customer add the product to the cart to get the discount, you can hide the discount code somewhere on the product page, like within the product description. Then, the customer would just need to enter the code at checkout to receive the order discount. With this set up you can also offer the Easter Egg product at $0 without impacting the discount.
Hope that works for you! If not, we're happy to look into it with you further.
