Why isn't sales tax calculating on certain draft orders?

Why isn't sales tax calculating on certain draft orders?

I just noticed an issue where certain orders aren't being charged sales tax, when they should.

A lot of my sales through this store are local services not purchased online, I create draft orders for these.

For example I have a draft order for a service, (item does not require shipping).  When no customer is assigned to the order, sales taxes are calculated.  As soon as I add a customer, taxes go to 0.   I noticed this today and looked back on some orders and sales tax wasn't charged when it should have been, dating back about a month.

I chatted with shopify support and they said they are aware of the issue and working on a fix....  But this is sales tax, pretty big deal... So now I have to do paper transactions until shopify gets this figured out?  This is basic stuff...

Only some orders seem to be affected, haven't thoroughly investigated yet, but seems maybe an issue with products that are "taxable" but "do not require shipping"  Probably something to do with how shopify bases taxes on zip code? IDK.

Anybody else having this issue?  Know a solution?

Yes having same issue with POS App right now. THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE. Sales Tax not calculating though I am logged in in the new location and have used the app successfully here for several events previously.

I am experiencing the same issue now. The helpdesk has been anything but helpful. They have given me several different things to change within my products. I have made all of the requested changes, but sales tax is still not appearing. I just realize this morning that custom sales added in the app have sales tax attached to them. The items that are already in my system, though, do not have sales tax apply to them. This is a complete nightmare. I have three major book fairs happening this week that cannot apply sales tax.

I am having this problem when I create a draft invoice in the back admin!  I create an invoice, toggle to have it charge sales tax, and it still won't figure the sales tax.  This needs to be fixed ASAP. We can't lose the sales and shouldn't have to pay the sales tax!! Shopify, this should be a priority. We all pay you a boat load of money each month. Please use some of it to get this fixed. Thanks.

Nevermind!  I figured out that the draft automatically sets the state to AL and not my state. I have to go into the customer and set the state to mine and then it will take the sales tax.  It seems like it would be beneficial to let us "default" to a state rather than have to do this every time.

We are having this issue as well --- this needs an immediate fix!  This is a basic function that we need to do business.

Yes! I'm having the same issue! I have to print the invoice then manually write in the sales tax amount. It's maddening!

Same, I just looked back and realized this was happening for orders I generated manually since June 2023!

Is this fixed? I have the same issue, can't send a draft order to customers. Everything works until I add a customer. Doesn't matter if I had the customer first (before adding the product) or after. I tried with different customers and still same issue.

Once I create a draft order and add a customer, sales tax is $0 until I edit the customer shipping address and select my state. Then it calculates sales tax. It isn't totally accurate, because it calculates city, state, local individually and rounds each one up, but at least it's calculating something.

But does the calculated tax end up in the total? Mine appears there but doesn’t actually get added to the total. I had 5 invoices last year that did not properly calculate tax, and now I’m trying to correct it for my taxes. This is nonsense. The amount we pay for Shopify, it shouldn’t be this difficult. And yes, every item is designated to charge sales tax.

Yes, the customers paid the total including tax. No issues.
