Why when I create a sale do the product prices not show the sale price?

It seems the only way to show customers the sale price on an item is the use the compare at price option, but this takes a lot of time to go through all the products and any discounts ignore that these items are on sale and apply extra discount to them.

Is there a way to run a sale and have the products actually show a sale badge and a sale price, rather than showing the regular price and only showing the customer the discounted price in the cart?

People are generally pretty stupid and don't understand what the discounted price will be without it actually being shoved in their faces.
