Re:

Solved

App automatic discount limitation

Hello Shopify,

I want to confirm my observation, is that correct that we can have maximum 5 active discounts created via `discountAutomaticAppCreate` mutation? I can't find any information in the documentation, but when I'm trying to add 6th active discount I receive this error from API:

'The active period overlaps with that of another price rule'.
Thanks for confirmation or even better for the link to the documentation.

Best,
Greg

This is an accepted solution.

Currently only 5 automatic function-based discounts can be active at a time. Function-based discount codes do not have this limitation, but customer carts can only have 5 codes added at most.

It's a number we plan to increase over time but we do not have any dates to share on this.

Are there any updates? I'm struggling to launch my grocery store just because I can't do more than 5 offers, grocery stores have a lot more products on offer than just 5.

When you talk about automatic function based discounts, do you refer to the Automatic App Discounts (Not the Automatic Basic Discounts) as listed in the documentation? What is the difference between both anyway?

Unprofessional, humiliating to say the least! Imagine having multiple apps installed using function-based discount!? max 5 🙂 if each uses only one discount function extension. Guys you need to solve this ASAP, otherwise is totally useless. August 13 is approaching!

This really needs to be updated. We love the shopify platform but some stores have special customers. Ours had VIP, Gold, Bronze, and Silver level customers. If I have a discount for each that is 5. But what if I want to give discounts based on product types? Physical, ebook, audiobook, etc? 5 as a limit is such a waste. And this also prevents me from timing them. If I already have 5 then I can set these to end and others to start up. I can give shipping discounts. Nothing. It is insanity.

As it is the discount section isn't complex enough. Automatic or code should allow based on customer tag or segment. Or even complex coding. Like for VIPs - Give 15% on books, 20% on ebooks, 30% on audiobooks... etc. And I should be able to pick the shipping method I want to discount.

Hey Nick, this issue is really crusial for our merchants. In some regions around the globe, the pricing on a product and the invoice of the related countries doesn’t match with normal discounts so we need to create function based discounts. 5 automatic discount limit really prevents lots of business and their legal process’

this issue is like that for like 2 years almost, are there any updates?

Shopify is incredibly frustrating. One one hand, it is a fantastic platform that's easy to use and configure to your needs and has all the building blocks to build a robust store. On the other hand, some of the decisions made in implementing certain features are atrocious.

We have a B2B business and are on the Shopify Plus plan. We were very excited to use the B2B features and offer custom price lists to our users. Come to find out B2B features are only available using New Customer Accounts that are passwordless and have a separate URL to manage company accounts. It's honestly a terrible experience.

OK, so what are our options? Discount Codes are not user friendly and are too easy to forget to enter. Automatic discounts are not customer specific so that won't work. Have to use a third party app then, and the choices are apps that use javascript to manipulate the store to use the Draft Order API at checkout (which easily and frequently breaks) or ones that use Shopify Functions. Oh wait, Shopify Functions limit you to only 5 active discounts. Are you freaking kidding me? Makes me want to go back to BigCommerce.

Seriously, how difficult is it to expand automatic discounts to specific customers? That would solve 95% off store owner's use cases. Also, Shopify needs to completely scrap New Customer Accounts and start over with B2B. Way too over engineered. Keep it simple give owners the ability to give automatic discounts to specific customers.

Hey all who face this same issue with the 5 app discount limit,

Please add a comment on this thread to let the Shopify team know how many of us would like this limit raised.

Thanks!

Can someone from Shopify update us on when this is likely to be updated, if at all, please? This post is 18 months old and there doesn't seem to be any sign of an increase. It does make you wonder if this is a business decision made by Shopify, in making the functionality limited in some way, giving them more leverage to push customers towards Shopify Plus.

Hello everyone, does anyone know when the limit will be increased?

Many of our customers want more than 5 discounts offers running at the same time. This limit is really frustrating and we are losing customers because of this. Shopify needs to increase this limit asap.

E' veramente frustante questa cosa. Noi inseriamo su tanti prodotti tabelle congli sconti sui volumi e ora ci ritroviamo con questo problema.

Speriamo si possa risolvere al più presto.

1 year later and still hasn't been any updates, shocking that it's limited to 5. I'm struggling as a grocery store that has 2,000 products and tons of offers. No idea why they have a limit

Hi Greg, are you able to reopen this post somehow? I don't think Shopify are interested in replying to any follow-up, as they have this already marked with an accepted solution. Maybe if we could reopen it, or open our own new ones, it may help get a reply.

Thanks
