Custom Sort By (Date and time) Metafield

We have created a custom Metafield as a "Date and time" to be used on our products. I want to Sort By (Oder By) this custom metafield on one of my collections. Are there any code changes or apps that will allow us to achieve the results we are looking for? If we can't add the custom field to the sort by dropdown then just backend code to make the correct sorting would be fine. Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, Shopify does not support sort for Metafields.

If you are open to 3rd party apps, you can try this app. So basically you will need to import metafield to the app, and then the app will allow you to sort products based on it (ascending or descending).
